Inspiring Conversations with Nicholas Johnson of Su Casa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Johnson.

Hi Nicholas, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We started as an offshoot of a store called The Big Iguana, known for it’s hippie gear; tie dyes, sundresses, handknit wool sweaters, incense, candles and jewelry. We wanted to sell more decor and home accessories than would fit in the current store so we expanded. From there we’ve gotten to 4 locations, although several others have opened and closed in the winding path that got us to today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We’ve struggled with COVID, obviously. But other than that we’ve been through 2 devastating floods in Ellicott City, riots and the associated unrest in Baltimore City after the death of Freddie Grey. We also struggle to grow while maintaining our commitment to personalized customer service.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Su Casa?
We are known for our commitment to the communities we serve and our commitment to living and breathing customer service. We believe that successful sales come from a genuine connection to your customers. We are known for, what we call, “legendary customer service”. We believe that the transaction follows the relationship and so the relationship is our primary objective. All of our policies and procedures are analyzed and re-analyzed from the customers’ perspective to ensure ultimate satisfaction. Our return policy is our not-so-secret sauce. We welcome returns of anything purchased, custom or otherwise to guarantee a customer is satisfied.

How do you think about luck?
Luck is something you don’t necessarily see until after an event. We’ve been lucky to avoid devastation to the level of our neighbors in the physical challenges we’ve faced. We’ve been lucky to be located in communities that support their local businesses. In life, I’ve been lucky to find my wife. She’s been there since the beginning and supported and challenged me along the way.
