Inspiring Conversations with MacKenzie Campbell of Kenzies Cookies & Creations

Today we’d like to introduce you to MacKenzie Campbell.

Hi MacKenzie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is MacKenzie Campbell, and I’m 28 years old. I’m from and am currently living in Columbia, MD. My story starts back in high school when I decided which career path I wanted to pursue—teaching or pastry Chef. When I was about 10 or 11 years old, I fell in love with baking and was consistently baking or creating something new. I didn’t start considering doing it for a living until I made my OH Honey cookies for a friend in high school. I chose to pursue a career in Early childhood education while I continued to bake as a hobby. After my second son was born, I decided to stay at home until he was old enough for preschool and wanted to find something to do during my downtime. That’s when I picked up baking again! I started baking random cookies, but then I found a community of “cookiers” (cookie artists) and fell in love! I started baking for my church in 2019, and things grew from there, which led to the start of Kenzie’s Cookies and Creations! I’m still a small business working from my kitchen; however, I hope to expand sometime in the future.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say that things have been easy. I started Kenzie’s Cookies and Creations close to the end of 2019. I was taking orders for birthday parties and events; however, once COVID-19 hit, business was at a standstill. I struggled with just wanting to give up but used the quarantine as the opportunity to take classes on different techniques and improve my skills. Balancing home life, motherhood, school, and work is a bit of a struggle. For the cookie business – a detailed, smaller order can take me up to 3-4 days to complete, while a larger order can take up to a week. Finding the right balance is still a struggle for me because I am just starting out it is just me. I bake, decorate, package, take orders, manage social media & events, and handle finances. But managing the number of orders I take on, is one of the most significant challenges. I struggle to say no to orders since I am a one-woman business, especially when they request something that allows me to use my creativity!

We’ve been impressed with Kenzies Cookies & Creations, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in custom-decorated cookies. I sell the custom decorated cookies by the dozen but also offer gift sets and pre-sales. I would say what sets me apart from other custom cookie businesses is the quality of the product I provide. If I am not 100% satisfied with my work, I won’t present it. My menu is small but I take pride in everything that I offer offered. my custom-decorated cookies are shortbread cookies decorated with royal icing. The decorations are hand piped; I try to shy away from airbrushing. Along with custom decorated cookies I also offer DYI kits (includes undecorated cookies, icing, and decorations). A sweet & simple shortbread cookie, a OH! Honey cookie, chocolate-covered pretzels, and Oreos, rice crispy treats, and hot chocolate bombs. Brand wise I am most proud of the name I have made for Myself around my hometown many know me as “cookie lady”. My goal is to make you smile and create that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you open a box of your favorite treat! but also get you to say “wow I can’t Believe these are cookies they look too good to eat.”

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people do not know that I am not a big fan of eating sweets/ desserts/ cookies. Of course, I taste test but a cookie is not the first thing I would grab if I wanted treat.
