Inspiring Conversations with Kiata Pickeral of Mental Language Apothecary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiata Pickeral.

Hi Kiata, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a pharmacy technician, I started on the other side of medicine to learn about medications my father was taking. I found the field boring until I learned how to compound medicine. It was this module that sparked my interest. An old memory resurfaced for me. I had this high fever I was like around 12 years old. My first “magical” experience, if you will, was with my mother. It was magical in that I saw her cut up potatoes and place them in a sheet she ripped off to become a scarf. She then put the wrapped potatoes on my forehead and told me to lie down. When I woke up, I remember feeling incredible! I looked inside the sheet scarf and saw the potatoes that once were white were now black, and I had no more fever. That day, I’ve become drawn to home remedies, which I now know as holistic & naturopathic medicine, which I use on myself and my immediate family. It was during massage school my vision came to me. I decided to start my apothecary and tea company to assist further the body reach homeostasis. For me, it seems I’ve come Full circle in my purpose.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Mental Language started as a jewelry company using healing crystals and precious stones. So Transitioning from what I used to have within my company into something different was challenging. I didn’t know whether to change the name or keep it. Does the tag line and mission stay the same? How do I go from this to that? I’ve discovered it all intertwines with one another, so that’s cool. Another obstacle has been getting away from the stigma of being a “witch doctor” (which sounds intriguing, if I must say) and getting away from the idea that I’m creating products. The consumer is partaking in something illegal. Aside from that- tapping into my market has been challenging. I’ve gone on hiatus many times because of it. If I’m honest, my target market is probably outside social media, so I need to take other routes of putting myself out there, like foot and pavement. As a mother, this way of marketing can be a little hectic, but I’m determined to make an impact.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What sets me apart from others is that we support and collaborate with other businesses. Our products and packaging are environmentally friendly, and the ingredients are of excellent quality, natural and organic. We use the whole ingredient, or as I say, “whole leaf, no sift,” which means you get a better quality cup of tea and product that contains herbs. Aside from that, I take a more spiritual approach in my business and plan to incorporate divination in the future when we get our tea shop- we will offer tarot readings & tasseography, which is divination through tea leaves. People should know that plant medicine has been around for centuries and Is a source and inspiration for conventional medication today. Even though it’s not a one-and-done approach, the effects last longer and prove beneficial. I do carry a certificate in herbalism, and I am continuously learning. Also, I need to disclose that I am not a doctor, and you should always consult your physician first, especially if you’re taking medication before trying new things.
