Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Contreras.
Diana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my business in April 2022. Food is one of my love languages and I had always loved to cook/bake and share with others. I had been creating charcuterie boards to enjoy with friends and also had been looking for a while on a small business idea to start. My friends suggested starting a charcuterie business and that’s how Honey D Charcuterie was created! I quickly jumped into it and created a logo, Facebook & Instagram pages, and started posting pictures of some of my creations. I wasn’t sure if I would get any orders in besides friends, but I did and it grew from there!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, and there have been some challenges along the way! When I first started the business I was not even sure if it would be successful at all, but thankfully there was interest quickly. I started to get orders in and I quickly gained a small following through social media. Running a business always has its struggles, and I had to learn and seek resources to help along the way. I started my business from my home and then quickly had to learn about the health department’s licensing process, getting business insurance, setting up and LLC, marketing, seeking a commercial kitchen space and so much more! It has not been a smooth road at all, but it’s part of building a business!
Currently, I only work my business on the weekends, as I work full-time as an HR Manager for a local CPA firm. So I am learning how to balance the two while running/growing my business in its first year. But I have the ability to set my own availability for orders and take breaks when needed to make sure that I am not overworking myself doing both.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Honey D Charcuterie is a licensed and insured charcuterie business based out of Frederick, MD. We specialize in creating charcuterie boards & boxes and grazing tables for any event. I love the process of selecting the ingredients for each board and finding the best products to use for my boards, and being able to try new ones to feature on future boards. I love creating the boards as its almost an artistic process to use your ingredients and create a beautiful arrangement for others to enjoy. Not every board ever comes out the same and that’s the best part that every board is customized to each person’s order.
I really enjoy hearing my customer’s feedback on how beautiful the boards were, the combinations of the cheeses, meats, and other board selections that they enjoyed trying for the first time.
Any big plans?
My future plans are to continue to grow my business! I have loved being able to meet new people in the community, creating boards for them and getting referrals. And I have also met a lot of amazing fellow charcuterie artists and other small business owners who are amazing resources and referral sources also I am looking forward to continuing to make all these new connections in the community, and I am also excited to go into my first holiday season this year!
