Inspiring Conversations with Casey of Snipes Design Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Snipes.

Casey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Snipes design agency was born in 2004 as a side hustle and a way to make extra money in college. At the time it was called the Designers Complex. I never really took it too seriously until after I graduated undergrad from North Carolina A&T and completed grad school at Savannah College of Art and Design.

While I was doing my job hunting, I decided that I could take on a few freelance clients until I got my footing. I went into the job field and it wasn’t anything that I expected. I knew that it was time to own my own business and play by my own rules. In 2014, I left my job as a high school art teacher and decided to be an entrepreneur full-time. That’s when Designers Complex became Casey Renae LLC.

I took on clients that were very community-based but they helped me get my footing while I learned the ins and outs of the business. Cut to six years later, I am now the owner and Creative Director of Snipes Design Agency. My agency helps small businesses and corporate brands establish intentional branding while telling their story visually. I’ve had the great opportunity to work with some amazing local and global brands and even some celebrities.

These clients have helped shape and grow who I am as a business owner, the things that I believe in, and I want to give back. Outside of serving clients, I also created Snipes Design University, which fully launches in August 2021. This is a hub where designers and creatives alike can come together to seek education in design essential software like Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, as well as overall business-essential skills that I wish someone had taught me while going up the ranks.

All this, plus juggling two beautiful boys at the same time. Granted I have my hands full, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
You know how they say nothing in life worth having comes easy?

Well, it’s the same thing in business. I went through the struggles of what felt like me being the only female in the area that was into design when I first left grad school and came back home. Once that had passed, I then went through the hoops of finding my footing as a graphic designer that was more than just flyers and random designs.

Now, the current struggle is continuing to find the sweet spot in pricing. You never want to feel like you are overcharging but you have to be compensated for your time and talent (time is money). Plus as a formally trained designer, I (and you too if you are) need to account for that in pricing.
