Inspiring Conversations with Briana Fletcher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Fletcher.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a passion for baking. Growing up, I loved spending my evenings after school watching baking tv shows and competitions. I was that one member of the family that consistently made birthday cakes for my friends and family throughout the years. I loved baking. Even setting up a bake sale to raise money for a scholarship.

Treats By Bri was the birth of my love for baking and my desire to pursue an entrepreneurial journey alongside my 9 to 5. I wanted to take up baking as a business but a lot of things changed shortly after I graduated college, and I feel as though I was just getting started with life.

Anyways, I decided that I would finally start selling cakes and treats. I made my debut during Valentine’s day of 2020. I started off by offering things like chocolate-covered strawberries, strawberry punchbowl cakes, and homemade rice Krispie treats. My first round of customers consisted of my close friends and family, as most businesses probably start. I believe I received one organic customer but that was about it at the time.

Fast forward a couple of weeks later and inquiries slowly starting coming in. Most inquiries came around a holiday like Mother’s Day and Father’s day, but I would have a couple of new customers in between. While things were slow, it was really encouraging to see that other people were hearing about me and giving me a shot. Then I started getting repeat customers. Overtime inquiries and sales picked up. I started refocusing my efforts into branding, running social media ads and attending local pop-up shops in the Baltimore area. I became really cool with the owner of the Brickrose Exchange, a venue that frequently hosted the pop-up shops I sold my treats at, and eventually became their recommended vendor for cake and dessert services. Since then, my number of sales have grew, I’ve had the chance to do to wedding cakes, and I get quite a few custom cake orders a month. It’s been an amazing experience, and I can only imagine what’s next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely was not a smooth road! One of my biggest obstacles was custom-designed cakes. I was always fine with making your everyday cakes but as my business grew, so did the complexity of their inquiries. People started asking me to do custom cakes and that was no a walk in the park. It took me hours upon hours to complete some of my first custom cake orders as there was a lot to learn. I really had to learn the science of baking and time management.

In addition to the technical stuff, sometimes it was just hard to stay motivated at times. Running a business is hard work. There can be near sleepless nights and a lot of time away from family and friends. Holidays can be rough! But this last year has really helped develop a stronger sense of mental and emotional discipline, and I find it much easier to soldier on when things may become a little overwhelming. But things have gotten better, and I await new challenges and obstacles to overcome.

Treats By Bri is a home-based bakery that provides sweet treats for all of your occasions. We are talking cupcakes, decorated sugar cookies, cake pops, candy apples, and chocolate covered EVERYTHING! One thing my customers have always told me is that they are amazed at how well I can incorporate a broad variety of ingredients, flavors, and styles into my work without compromising that premium-quality taste that every cake should have.
