Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Ballesteros.
Hi Alejandra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Becoming an Esthetician has always been one of my primary goals.
From an early age, I studied cosmetology in my country and that’s when my passion for a career focused on helping others to enhance their beauty became bigger. Six years ago, I moved to the US in pursue better opportunities and to spend more time with my mother who by that time just had my two youngest siblings,
I always wanted to be a professional woman and have my own business, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I wasn’t familiar with the language so I knew I had to start from scratch. First I started working three or four jobs at a time to be able to save money and afford life, I won’t lie I tried to take English classes but I felt they weren’t helping me with the vocabulary I had to use in my life.
That is why I will always be thankful to my coworkers at the restaurant I was working at, they helped me and taught me everything they could using their order notepads. It was fun! I started my business lashing at the houses of some of my friends, then I found a beauty studio where I could rent a chair and see my clients in an environment more professional.
I was still working 3 jobs at the time and trying to gain clients for my business when COVID-19 started, after that I lost all my jobs and the beauty studio I was renting at had to close. After two months of quarantine, I started looking for jobs again, I did everything I could from delivering newspapers at four am in the morning to working cleaning the supermarkets before they opened.
It was all I could do as an “essential worker” at that time. Some of my friends that were essential and have jobs at the bank or hospitals asked me to do their lashes, so I started lashing again. By the end of 2020 when the quarantine was over and we were allowed to go out to restaurants and more places my boyfriend suggested I rent my own place and open my own beauty studio, something that I wasn’t ready for.
It was a crazy idea after COVID-19, I was scared of getting the virus or not making enough money to run a business. Today, I can say it was thanks to him that pushed me so hard into doing it. We took the risk and now it’s been almost two years since I opened my little studio.
All I can say is even if I haven’t accomplished all my goals, I feel that I already am a successful woman with a successful business that keeps growing. Now, I am pregnant and independent, able to manage my own time and help others to gain confidence in themselves and see the beauty they’ve always had.
I am so grateful for every moment and every client. I’ve met so many people that have become family.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say it definitely has not been obstacle-free. I do believe we all need obstacles to learn and become what we are now, it adds that special touch to your brand and molds your personality.
That is why in my business name I added “BOSS”, I feel that everything I went through was a lesson that helped me to be ready to manage my business and everything I want to accomplish with it.
“I am a BOSS now; I can do this! ” it’s what I repeat to myself every time I see difficulties.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
