Today we’d like to introduce you to Walter Lewis.
Hi Walter , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Before I became a trainer and fitness consultant, I spent 13 years working for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a Data Analyst, where I tracked the cycle time of patent and trademark applications. Prior to my federal career, I proudly served 8 years in the U.S. Army, an experience that instilled discipline, structure, leadership, and a strong work ethic—principles that still guide how I train, coach, and run my business today.
In the late 1990s, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office opened an on-site gym, and that became a major turning point in my life. I was in the gym every day—during lunch and often before or after work. Coworkers noticed my consistency and began asking me for fitness advice, weight loss guidance, and training tips. I didn’t have all the answers initially, so I went home, researched, and leaned on my own experiences of getting myself in shape.
Before long, coworkers asked if I would train them. I did—completely for free—because I genuinely enjoyed watching people transform. The results were undeniable. One coworker lost over 40 pounds, another lost 20, and others improved their health, confidence, and energy levels. That’s when I realized this was more than a hobby. I had always wanted to own my own business, and I knew fitness was my calling.
In 2003, I became a Certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise (ACE). After gradually building a client base while still working full-time, I took a leap of faith. In 2005, I left the federal government and launched Walter Lewis Fitness Solutions (WLFS) full-time.
Since then, I’ve trained and coached over 15,000 clients and have been in business for 20 years. WLFS has been featured in The Washington Post and has held long-standing corporate wellness contracts, including Gaylord National Harbor Hotel, where we’ve provided fitness services to employees and conference guests since 2010. In 2011, my expertise helped Gaylord National Harbor earn recognition as the 2nd Healthiest Employer, a milestone I’m especially proud of.
From 2012 to 2019, I also held a corporate wellness contract with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), providing fitness classes, coaching, and consulting to more than 500 employees. Additional corporate clients have included MITRE, Boeing, Westin Hotel, and many others. I’ve been a featured speaker at SHRM’s Annual Conferences in Chicago and New Orleans, The Institute for Workplace Equality Conference, and most recently, the 2024 Gulf Coast Community Services Association Conference in Houston, TX.
Another unique chapter of my career has been serving as a pageant fitness coach, helping contestants achieve elite conditioning and stage-ready physiques. Several of the individuals I coached went on to win or place highly in national pageants, including:
Julianna McKee – Teen International 2010 (Winner)
Chelsey Rodgers – Miss International 2010 (Top 10)
Dr. Allison Hill – Miss International 2012 (Fitness Award Winner)
Courtney Ballinger – Miss DC USA 2015 (Top 10)
Azria Roundtree – Miss Connecticut USA 2013 (Top 15)
Heather Young – Miss Maryland USA 2012 (3rd Runner-Up)
Taylor Dawson – Miss Maryland Teen USA 2015 (Winner)
In 2011, I was also featured and interviewed by Pageant Professors as an expert pageant fitness coach.
In 2020, like many business owners, I had to pivot during COVID. With in-person training limited, I launched Virtual Bootcamp, delivering structured, live fitness classes through Zoom with the help of additional instructors. The program quickly took off and continues to grow. Today, Virtual Bootcamp serves over 60 members and includes live and on-demand workouts, strength training, HIIT, yoga, dance fitness, nutrition programs, meal plans, progress tracking, and a supportive community—all accessible through the Walter Lewis Fitness Solutions app.
I’m also the author of several eBooks, including 36 Hour Fast: The Powerful Reset Your Body & Mind Needs and the 7-Day Fitness, Nutrition & Commitment Challenge e-Journal.

At the core of everything I do is a simple mission: helping people become the healthiest versions of themselves. I truly love what I do, and I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to help others transform their health, confidence, and quality of life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. Like most long-term businesses, the road has required adjustments, pivots, and resilience.
After launching Walter Lewis Fitness Solutions in 2005, I was hit hard by the economic downturn in 2008–2009. Client numbers dropped, and I had to make a practical decision to stabilize my income. Along with maintaining the clients I already had, I began working at a gym. That move helped support me financially, but it also opened the door to new relationships and new clients—several of whom are still with me today.
That period taught me an important lesson: sometimes you don’t retreat—you reposition. Working in gyms while continuing to build my own business allowed me to stay visible, stay relevant, and keep growing even during uncertain times. Around that same time, a major opportunity came along when Gaylord National Harbor reached out to me in 2010 to provide fitness classes for their employees. That partnership became a cornerstone of my business and helped carry WLFS through a challenging economic period.
For years, I balanced multiple roles—working at two gyms while simultaneously running Walter Lewis Fitness Solutions. Then in 2020, another major disruption hit: COVID-19. With gyms closing and in-person training no longer viable, I was forced to pivot once again.
Ironically, that challenge pushed me into something I had always wanted to do but never fully pursued—virtual training. COVID gave me the push I needed to take that leap. I transitioned fully into online coaching and launched Virtual Bootcamp. What started as a necessity quickly became a success, allowing me to serve clients in a new, scalable way.
That shift also gave me the clarity and confidence to leave my part-time gym roles for good. Since then, Virtual Bootcamp has become a core part of the business and a powerful way to help people stay consistent, connected, and healthy—no matter where they are.
Looking back, the challenges weren’t setbacks—they were catalysts. Each pivot strengthened the business, expanded my reach, and reinforced the importance of adaptability, structure, and long-term vision.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Walter Lewis Fitness Solutions (WLFS) is a health, fitness, and wellness consulting company built specifically for busy professionals and active aging adults who want real, sustainable results—not quick fixes. We specialize in helping adults, primarily 40 and over, build strength, improve mobility, reduce inflammation, lose weight, and create habits that actually stick.
What we’re known for is structure over motivation. Many fitness programs rely on hype, extreme workouts, or short-term challenges. WLFS takes a different approach. We focus on consistency, discipline, education, and lifestyle integration. Our programs are designed to meet people where they are—physically, mentally, and emotionally—while helping them progress safely and confidently.
Our offerings include:
Virtual Bootcamp with live and on-demand strength training, HIIT, yoga, dance fitness, and mobility classes
Corporate wellness programs for conferences, hotels, and organizations
Health and fitness retreats, both in-person and virtual
1-on-1 coaching and consulting
Educational resources, including eBooks, challenges, and nutrition guides
Everything we do is built around long-term health, not short-term aesthetics.
What truly sets WLFS apart is our experience and longevity. We’ve been in business for 20 years and have worked with over 15,000 clients—ranging from beginners to executives, seniors, corporate teams, and pageant competitors. We don’t guess. Our methods are tested, refined, and proven over decades of real-world application.
We’re also known for our strong community and accountability. WLFS isn’t just a workout program—it’s a support system. Clients stay with us an average of five years because they feel seen, supported, and empowered. They’re educated on why they’re doing what they’re doing, which leads to confidence and independence, not dependency on a trainer.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of our integrity and adaptability. From surviving economic downturns to successfully pivoting into virtual training during COVID, WLFS has remained rooted in its mission while evolving with the times. Our Virtual Bootcamp, now accessed through the WLFS app, allows clients to train anytime, anywhere, without sacrificing quality or connection.
What I want readers to know most is this: WLFS isn’t about perfection, extremes, or starting over every few months. It’s about building a healthier life that fits your real schedule, real energy, and real responsibilities. Whether someone is just getting started, returning after years away from fitness, or looking to train smarter as they age, WLFS provides the structure, guidance, and support to help them become the healthiest version of themselves—now and for the long run.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
One thing I’d like readers to know is that health is not about perfection—it’s about commitment and consistency. After working with thousands of clients over the past two decades, I’ve learned that most people don’t fail because they lack motivation; they struggle because they lack structure and support. That’s exactly what Walter Lewis Fitness Solutions was built to provide.
I’d also like people to understand that my work is deeply personal. I’m in my 50s, and I train alongside my clients. I don’t just teach these principles—I live them. Everything we offer at WLFS is designed with real life in mind: busy schedules, aging bodies, stress, family responsibilities, and limited time. Our goal is to help people train smarter, recover better, and stay active for decades—not just for a season.
From a brand perspective, I’m proud that WLFS has remained independent, relationship-driven, and integrity-based for 20 years. We’ve grown primarily through word of mouth, long-term client relationships, and results—not trends or gimmicks. That longevity means something to me.
If there’s one takeaway I’d want readers to leave with, it’s this:
You don’t need a dramatic reset to change your life. You need a few solid habits, the right guidance, and a willingness to stay consistent—even when motivation fades.
That’s the heart of Walter Lewis Fitness Solutions—helping people build strength, confidence, and health that lasts.
