Hidden Gems: Meet Theo Jones of Weekend Whitecoat Concierge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theo Jones.

Hi Theo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I initially started out working my first nursing job working as an LPN in corrections nursing, I have seen an influx of preventable conditions in young patients at an alarming rate, but I wanted to have more career action in my younger years. After passing my RN boards and getting licensed, I started working as a new graduate at John’s Hopkins. I started initially in the ICU and subsequently going to trauma surgery afterwards.

I spent four years in the OR, which was amazing and created the flexibility for me to train as an advanced practice nurse. I trained in internal medicine/family practice, and pediatrics which were fulfilling, but the idea for Weekend Whitecoat began to develop here. I see a pocket of patients who had less time with their provider but more problems to go over, and the problem was the providers needed volume to make their quota. I spoke to two of my previous physicians who trained me and they thought the idea would never work ha! I hit the ground running in 2018 and never looked back. I started with three patients, and so far, they have been with me since day one.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, not by far has it been an easy trip. Entrepreneurship has been bumpy, especially during a pandemic. It’s a time where people are very skeptical of healthcare and very distrustful of interventions. I think that this is partly due to the lack of primary care teams’ role in patients’ lives. Small business always suffer first when money slows down in the economy.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Weekend Whitecoat Concierge?
We are a health and wellness company. Providing telemedicine, house calls, specialty IV infusions, preventative care, health coaching, point of care testing for COVID, influenza, strep throat and more. I think what sets us apart from a traditional experience in a doctor’s office is the 24 hour Model and patient-centered experience. Membership patients get a comprehensive assessment yearly without having to leave their home. I’m proud of the customer engagement in the practice. They respond the best to the mobile all specialized just for the patients.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up in east Baltimore, I gotta admit I hated the idea of science. I was always inquisitive and willing to learn. I spent most my time reading newspapers, books, I didn’t get a TV in my room until 8th grade at best. I had four other siblings so of course, money was tight. I think my attendance at my high school Baltimore City College (City forever !), really shaped my world. I knew college was what I was supposed to do but the college advising office and my parents made it real for me.
