Hidden Gems: Meet Shiopei Low, L.Ac of Patapsco Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shiopei Low, L.Ac.

Shiopei, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My family is immigrant Taiwanese/Chinese, so I grew up with the principles of traditional medicine embodied in my daily life. I saw how it empowered my mother and grandmother to be able to take care of our family’s health.

When I had my own family, I wanted to be able to support their health in the same way.

At the same time, I watched a close family member struggle with a chronic medical condition and only acupuncture treatments gave them any kind of real mental and physical relief from their symptoms that medications could not provide.

Both of these reasons motivated me to want to bring the same kind of holistic relief and wellness to others.

After graduating from a 4-year program and gaining experience, I decided to open up my own acupuncture clinic to offer my local community alternative solutions for their chronic pain or condition. There is a time for standard medical treatments but there is also a time for the wisdom of traditional medicine. That’s the gap I hope to bridge.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has had challenges. As an Asian-American, growing up identifying with two cultures, there was a lot I had to unlearn and relearn about how to approach health and wellness.

Though I was familiar with some of the concepts, deepening my understanding of the principles behind traditional wisdom required opening my mind in ways I wasn’t used to. I had to find my own identity and way to practice this medicine that has been passed down for thousands of years.

Learning to trust myself has been a big part of my journey, something that I am still learning to do. I am motivated to find the best results for my patients, and having a variety of filters and tools from both my cultural and traditional understanding of medicine, to modern western research is something I enjoy utilizing every day.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Patapsco Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine?
Patapsco Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine is a multifaceted, patient-centered integrative medicine clinic that supports the recovery and maintenance of health & wellness in the people of South Carroll County and surrounding communities.

My clinic specializes in treating chronic pain and complex conditions such as neuropathy, fibromyalgia, auto-immune conditions, and fertility. The majority of my patients come to acupuncture as a last resort after having been everywhere else in the medical system and finding no real solutions to help their symptoms.

My goal is always to give patients their health back, so they can do the things they love with whom they love, and live a vibrant life.

I start each patient with a comprehensive evaluation so improvements can be measurably tracked over time. It’s been amazing to see the majority of my patients improve in functionality and pain after receiving regular acupuncture treatment.

What I love about this medicine is that it’s a “bottom-up” approach to wellness in that acupuncture directly influences the body towards a healthy state, versus other modalities where a conscious effort is required to start the process.

If there’s one thing I want people to know, is that there is always hope. You don’t have to just live with your pain or condition. You CAN feel better, and acupuncture may just be the thing that helps.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
As a new business and practice owner, I’m realizing more and more the importance of mindset.

The mind can be a powerful tool and ally but it takes time and practice to develop that habit so it works for you instead of against you. Fear, doubt, overwhelm and even shame can be familiar feelings, but I’m learning that I do not have to let those feelings direct my life or make decisions for me.

Staying committed to the vision, the goal, and the “why” I do what I do is getting me through the challenges of being a practice owner.
