Hidden Gems: Meet Sharon Lewis of Sharon M Lewis Money Coach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Lewis.

Hi Sharon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Washington, DC, and a daughter of Guyanese immigrant parents. My mom and four siblings moved to Brooklyn, NY, after my mom separated from my dad. My oldest sibling stayed in DC to finish school.  My mom did not understand investing and money concepts, and neither did I. As a matter of fact, our friends and family members were in similar positions.

Living in a predominantly immigrant community, we were not exposed to financial concepts such as investing. We saved the way my mom saved  in her native country. We call it “Su-Su,” ‘Box,” and some Caribbean countries use the term “Partner.” A “Su-Su” is a pool of a specified dollar amount among a group of trusted people for a specified number of weeks. We used “Su-Su’s” to purchase our cars and our homes.

In my mid-twenties. A financial advisor  met with my family and explained the concept of investing and accumulating wealth. I was able to start an investment account with as little as $50 a month. Very affordable for someone my age. I was also offered an opportunity to work with them part-time, where I could teach my friends and other families how to plan and invest for their financial future.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In 2015, I was laid off from my then full-time job, so my part-time contractor financial services position became full-time. I faced some challenges because I was not paid a salary. I worked a full-time commission-based position, so transitioning from salary to commission took time to figure out a steady flow of income. Also, from a prospective client perspective, I have to unravel so much mistrust, miseducation, and fear. This challenge tends to result in folks not taking any action or the wrong action regarding their financial journey. When helping individuals and families.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in helping families plan,  invest and eliminate debt. We use cutting-edge digital software that provides a clear roadmap on the steps a family may need to accomplish their financial goals. For example, we help families with investing, retirement planning, college savings, debt management, life insurance, and Wills/Trust Services. If you are looking for an advisor that provides personalized guidance, dedicated support, and one-on-one meetings, then I’m your person! People often ask me, what makes me different, and I say, “It’s me”! (smile).

I am the proudest when my clients say “thank you, Sharon” or “I trust you, Sharon.” It brings joy to my heart! I want my readers to know that my services are complimentary. Yes! Free! There is no charge to meet with me. Also, I wrote a few books teaching children about money. During my 20+ years in the financial services industry, I realized that there is a disconnect in how we learn about money and that we should teach money concepts as children, not as adults.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
For those starting in the financial industry, I would say make sure you work with a mentor to help guide you along your path. Honestly, I wish I had understood the concept of being a business owner early in my career. I always wanted to be a business owner but didn’t understand what it took.
