Hidden Gems: Meet Sade Marie of My Empowering Impact

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sade Marie.

Hi Sade, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
On November 26, 2011, I wrote a letter to God detailing the desires of my heart to own my own mental health and counseling center to help people from all walks of life. I stated in that letter that the business would be named My Empowering Impact. Prior to that letter, I spent years in Coppin State University pursuing a field of study that did not speak to my life and one day I decided that I was not going to continue down that road, so I went on a journey to discover my true calling which was Social Work. I went on to attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore and graduated with my Master’s degree in Social Work as well. In the meantime, life was happening to me. I was battling issues with fertility that left me feeling hopeless as a woman. After 7 miscarriages and 8 losses, I finally went on to have a rainbow baby. During the time of my pregnancy, I experienced multiple life-threatening pregnancy complications. I was hospitalized for 3 months, I had A condition called Premature Rupture of Membranes (PPROM), placenta increta, hemorrhaging, emergency 3-4 hour surgery, blood transfusions, lost a portion of my organ, hematomas, and pulmonary embolisms. My job terminated me while I was in the hospital, I went bankrupt, and my mental health declined all while my son was in his NICU journey battling his own health challenges. These events caused me to want to give up. I felt like I lost my life. I battled Severe Depression, Anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and I could not find quality mental health services to help me. Every therapist and quality mental health center had extremely long months of waiting or did not accept my health insurance. By the grace of God, I made it through and recovered. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and after being on the opposite side of the table in a mental health crisis as a mental health professional it catapulted my expertise to a whole new level of understanding. As a result, I expanded My Empowering Impact into an Out Patient Mental Health Clinic to be able to serve people from all walks of life just as I envisioned it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been easy.

Some of the challenges have been:
– Being a Single Mother to a Child with Challenges.
– Lack of Support. Not having people believe in my vision at first was hard. Some people didn’t believe it until they could see it.
– Being a double minority as a Black Woman owned business.
– The financial aspect of building a business to get it up and running.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about My Empowering Impact?

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The Covid-19 Crisis taught me to be more innovative with the transition to telehealth. Everyone was affected by Covid-19 and mental health skyrocketed causing mental health services to be more in demand than ever before. Business owners had to learn how to pivot and navigate and that is exactly what I did.
