Hidden Gems: Meet Natasha & Silesia Moss of Batter From Scratch Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha & Silesia Moss. 

Hi Natasha & Silesia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Natasha: I have been baking since I was about 10 years old. It was my maternal grandmother who taught me how to bake. cakes and pies. Even while stationed in Seoul, Korea, I would bake for my office. Yes, I’m an Army veteran. After my grandmother passed away in 1993, I didn’t have much reason to bake. It wasn’t until 2014 that I started baking for coworkers or work events while in North Carolina. Everyone loved what I brought to work. ESPECIALLY the Vanilla Pound Cakes. Some even thought I bought the cakes from a local bakery. To their surprise, it was me. From there, I was constantly asked if I had my own business. However, actual business talk didn’t start until my daughter, Silesia, and I had moved to Maryland. 

Silesia: I didn’t start decorating cakes until my first job at a neighborhood grocery store in 2016. As a beginner, I was mostly nervous about writing on the cakes. Though I only worked there for a little over a year, it was an amazing experience that I will never forget. In 2019, I moved up to Maryland and began decorating the cakes my mother took to work. All the positive feedback we received gave me the idea to convince my mother that it was time to start our own business. And in October 2020, Batter From Scratch Bakery was formed. 

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Natasha: It has been a bit of a bumpy road. Later in 2020, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I’m truly thankful for the support from my family and friends. Although learning of any medical condition can be taxing mentally, physically, and emotionally. During this time, I had three (3) surgeries and completed radiation treatment. I heavily relied on my daughter to do more baking. So, I wasn’t always available to help except to sit up late nights with her while she completed orders. Add to that the fact that I also work a full-time job. 

Silesia: Being self-taught, it is challenging doing some of the new decorating techniques that are seen on social media. On the other hand, it is fun learning different ways to be more artistic. Since my mother’s diagnosis, I have been introduced to the struggles of baking. I’ve had some cakes that weren’t completely done in the middle. At that point, the only thing to do is take a breath and start over. 

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Batter From Scratch Bakery?
Natasha: Batter From Scratch Bakery (BFS) brings the North Carolina homemade desserts that we grew up loving to the Maryland area. We pride ourselves on providing fresh made-to-order desserts. Cakes, cheesecakes, pies, cookies, etc. Customers can request delivery or pickup. As a way to continue to get our name and goods to the public, we frequently participate in pop-up vendor events for the community. Our best seller is our vanilla pound cake followed by our delicious strawberry shortcake. As a home-based business, it is our goal to find the perfect location so our customers can come in and satisfy their sweet tooth. When they walk in the smell of deliciousness will take them back to when they would visit their grandmother’s house, just in time for her desserts. 

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
Silesia: Taking risks, go hand in hand with wanting to enjoy your life to the fullest. There will be times when you have to decide what is best for you and your future… No matter what other people’s opinions are. Starting a business was a huge risk for us. At the time, we both had full-time jobs and struggled to get our name out there. We weren’t sure what kind of licenses we would possibly need to sell out of home or at events. The start of something can be nerve-wracking. However, there is nothing wrong with taking your time to adjust to new things.

    Tasha, I already know that your baked goods are delicious, but I didn’t quite know Silesia’s talent for decorating. Absolutely beautiful! You know I’m diabetic, and I haven’t had a piece of cake, pie, ice cream or candy since Jan. of this year. Make a cake and donate it to someplace nice. I’ll give Darryllyn the money to give to you.
