Today we’d like to introduce you to Naeomi Samuel.
Hi Naeomi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for education is truly a gift from God! Growing up, I always loved school and built lasting relationships with my teachers! Some of them I am still connected to, and I am forever grateful. If someone told me I would be a true educator in the field of education, I would not have believed them. I realized that education was my career after working as an Extended Day Instructor at a DC Public Charter School during my junior and senior years of undergrad at The University of Maryland-College Park. I connected with the students in a way that empowered them to go beyond their learning experience’s basic requirements and push the limits on what they could achieve. I experienced positive behavior changes, improved grades, better communication, and respect amongst my peers and instructors.
Based on my performance as an Extended Day Instructor from 2008 to 2010, I was offered an assistant teacher position at another campus. Following that position, I fulfilled several roles that fortified my journey– Lead Teacher, Afterschool Program Manager, and Summer School Principal. I have also worked in various sectors in the field of education–private school and homeschooling. All of these positions provided progressive reciprocity between my students and I. However, my role as a Lead Teacher has brought me the most joy, the everlasting joy.
At the beginning of 2015, I was asked to provide private tutoring for a sibling of one of my former students who needed some additional support in reading. In a few months, I noticed a significant increase in her confidence and ability to read, which increased her comprehension ability. Her mother saw a significant shift as well. It was then that I realized that private tutoring effectively extended my gift as an educator. My father encouraged me to turn my passion into additional profit and on June 19, 2015, Destined 2 Educate, LLC was formed and began to flourish!
Destined 2 Educate, LLC has grown much over the last six years. I take great pride in “Transforming Knowledge Beyond Limits.” I provide unique learning experiences for my “D2E Stars,” as I call them, where they shine brighter and brighter after each session. Word of mouth about who I am as an educator and what I provide to my stars has been the greatest blessing and contributor to the growth of Destined 2 Educate, LLC. In addition to word of mouth, Social Media (i.e., Destined 2 Educate’s website and Facebook and Instagram) has allowed us to expand our reach to learners in need. I hope and pray that as we continue to “Transform Knowledge Beyond Limits,” our reach will extend nationally and internationally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been fairly smooth because when I started, I only serviced a few clients due to teaching full time. I was able to minimize overbooking and feeling overwhelmed. Two challenges brought some things into perspective and shifted my focus. The first challenge, was that I did not have a contract to secure that families submitted payments on time or set up a payment arrangement. I lost a significant amount of money for services rendered due to not having a contract. Therefore, I am in the process of creating a contract for the upcoming summer. The other challenge was being the only tutor, having several clients to serve, and managing it without being overwhelmed. I brought on a former student to serve as an independent contractor and provide services for a high school student whom I could not commit to because of my schedule at the time.
As you know, we’re big fans of Destined 2 Educate, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Destined 2 Educate (D2E) was founded by a true educator whose passion is to empower learners to “Transform their knowledge beyond limits!”
Destined 2 Educate (D2E) is a holistic learner-centered experience that offers authentic and innovative educational services to all learners. One-on-one, small group (2-10 learners), and our whole group (11-19 learners) experiences are available.
D2E provides individualized instruction using a multimedia approach, where incorporating various mediums makes the teaching-learning experience more effective and meaningful.
Each experience is tailored to the learner’s needs in English Language Arts, Literacy, Math, Social Studies, Science, Writing, and Foreign Languages. The foundation of each learner’s experience is built on the motivation to strengthen their academic involvement, character development, and overall achievement.
D2E also provides health education services for individuals who desire to improve their overall health and well-being and educational consulting to assist families with educational planning for their children (i.e., the college application process, transitioning from public to private school, transitioning to homeschool).
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
God, Family, and Education. Those were the three things my paternal grandmother believed in and stood firmly on, and like her namesake, it is engraved in my entire being. I am forever grateful to her for modeling the importance of having a real relationship with God to my father and that he met my mother, who is also a woman of faith. I grew up in a home that modeled a genuine relationship with God and was empowered to live life putting God first. I desired at a young age to live a life devoted to Christ, and it has been the fuel to the life I live today. I come from a large family who migrated to the United States from a small island in the Caribbean called Grenada. The United States was the land of opportunity when my family emigrated here. I remember hearing stories about primary and secondary school and how my paternal grandmother ensured my father and his siblings went to school and did well even after leaving their home in Grenada. My parents believe in the power of education and encouraged my sister and me to do well in school. Not attending college was not an option. We knew what the expectation was and we did not take it lightly or play around when it came to school. Yes, it was challenging but we pushed through with our faith in God and ourselves. We stand proud today as faithful, wise, educated, and successful women. When I was in high school and preparing for college, I remember my grandmother saying, “Do well in school so you can have the things you desire in life,” I will never forget that! It is the fuel that I need to pour that same love and encouragement into my students and clients. My grandmother loved her family, which brought her great joy when we gathered for birthdays, holidays, and family reunions. I enjoy it with the same intensity and take pride in carrying on my grandmother’s legacy–Keep God First, Cherish Family and Use your passport to life–Your Education!
