Hidden Gems: Meet Monica Indigo Sunni-Jones of APEX Radio Show

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Indigo Sunni-Jones.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It is always difficult for me to figure out where to begin the tapestry of life events and subsequent stories. But in a sincere effort to do so here goes:

I graduated from high school in Binghamton, NY in 2005 with IB and AP credentials and then from Howard University in 2012 with a B.A. in Mass Communications/Print Online Journalism and minor in Psychology. My son, Josiah was 1.5 years of age at the time I graduated.

As a single mother, the pressure to become self-sufficient was intensified. I held various work positions, was laid off for the first time from a nonprofit early childhood care facility, and gained experience enough to know that I may need to start considering alternative routes to secure my financial stability and peace of mind as a mother and a human being.

Ever since middle school, I have been a beneficiary of mentorship and the benefits of being a mentor to other young ladies through my intrinsic self-leadership abilities. That mindset is what largely informed my idea to start my own consultation and coaching business for creative entrepreneurs and artists, Indigo Monarchy, in 2015. In addition to working full time and growing in motherhood competency, I began to take on clients on a 1-on-1 basis and assisted them in scaling their businesses and concepts to increased productivity.

Working 1-on-1 I learned I enjoyed working with others to pursue their passions, however, I also wanted to scale beyond my personal capacity for positive impact.

Ironically, it was the COVID-19 epidemic that jump-started “the mountain climb to the top” aka “the highest point of YOUR Week” aka APEX Radio Show in April of 2020 when I was laid off from my job at The Phillips Collection, a cultural art museum. During that time, I discovered my passion for creating and curating safe spaces conducive for root healing and self-expression working with the under-resourced and overlooked parents and caregivers of Southeast Washington, DC.

APEX Radio Show is a radio-tv podcast freeform platform that seeks to showcase professional promotion of the products and services of creative artists and entrepreneurs across the global diaspora.

A few months after its fateful launch on the WINDC online radio platform, APEX Radio Show started hosting its own brand of networking pop-ups called #SageShmoke Social Sessions. This global pop-up model includes opportunities for cross-genre independent artists to perform their songs and poems live and in-person and to network with hybrid entrepreneurs and invested sponsors at each session. The goal is to cultivate a supportive #newwave incubator for Hi-Vibe collaboration and connection. Although curated, sessions are open to the public to encourage symbiotic community support for black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.

In the past two years since launching, we have grown exponentially in the Baltimore/DMV area as well as globally and are looking eagerly towards the coming months of continued opportunity and Absolute Destined Nation #absolutedestinednation tribe growth through increased philanthropy, community activism, and expanded event coverage.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! It was definitely a tremendous faith walk and learning journey in taking full responsibility for the value, integrity, and deliverance of my own products as services. I did have the benefit of working as the general manager of another local radio show, Club Plug Radio. However, after the tragic loss of my business partner and friend Matt “Trust” Attatyi in a car accident, it presented me with the pivotal life challenge of stepping up and out or back into my previous “discomfort zone”. I choose the to step up and out.
