Hidden Gems: Meet Miles Blackman of MilesAheadTennis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miles Blackman.

Hi Miles, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Miles Blackman, and I am the owner of Miles Ahead Tennis Around the age of ten, I began playing tennis and was introduced to other sports such as soccer, track and field, and so on. My dad took me to my first tennis lesson, which I really enjoyed; that was the beginning of my journey. Growing up, I took many group and private lessons. However, the organization that had the greatest long-term impact was PGTEF (Prince Georges Tennis and Education Foundation), which helped expose youth to tennis. Nic Askew, my coach, was an incredible role model. His passion for the game and concern for us was very apparent. In college, I studied computer science because I have always been passionate about technology. After two years of college, the demand was so high that I decided to pursue My Tennis business full-time. With the knowledge I attained, I then created a small website of my own and began accepting online bookings. After about a year and a half, I realized that I needed a better website in order to scale. So, I did some research and spent some time developing a website that allows you to set up programs anywhere, whether they are private lessons, groups lessons, school programs, or location hubs. Because we offered such a low price point and high-quality coaches, our growth was natural. I enlisted the help of some of my friends who shared my love for the game to keep up with the demand. Because we offered such a great price point and high-quality coaches, our growth was natural.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Though the ride has been enjoyable thus far, it has not always been smooth, ranging from budget overruns to design flaws. Scheduling conflicts are unavoidable when trying to expand, especially since many of our coaches play college tennis and we only select coaches who are passionate about teaching. We usually attract good coaches because we compensate our coaches very well. Compensating the coaches has worked out because you usually get what you pay for; however, it has brought challenges because the coaches get compensated regardless of class volume.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Ironically, the game of tennis has grown significantly with COVID-19 since people are socially distanced by nature. This has been an attractive option for people looking for an outlet. Tennis is a sport that can get very expensive; however, it Is beginning to open up to more people, making it more accessible to those who previously could not afford it. We believe that if tennis’ infrastructure can be improved to make it more accessible and affordable, more people will be drawn to this wonderful sport.
