Hidden Gems: Meet Michael Anderson of Homemade from the heart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Anderson.

Hi Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I had loved baking since I was younger when I baked with my mother and grandmother. When I became an adult, I started a family that became my focus, and I stopped baking as much. Then around March 2019, I started baking again. First, it was just for my family and friends. Then people began to ask if they could buy my cakes for different events they were hosting or attending. When COVID came working from home gave me additional time before and after work to build up my business, and Homemade From The Heart was born. I created a social media presence and a website and started doing pop-up events and craft shows. In 2021 I expanded and began selling cookies which took off almost more than my cakes. In 2022 I started selling at Farm Chicks and got into my first commercial store. It has been an amazing ride over the last four years, and I can’t wait to see where Homemade From The Heart will take me next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest challenges was getting my baked goods into the Farm Chicks store; This was a considerable undertaking being my first store; It was a six months process from start to finish. It took around five months to get my cottage law license approval. This was the most challenging part as I had to go back and forth with the Maryland Department of Health for about five months to get all my recipes and labels approved to sell my baked goods in a retail store. Once the cottage law license was approved, it took another month to get my packaging right, sell everything individually, and look retail-ready. I embraced this challenge as a learning experience that will help me to grow and expand my business to other stores in the future.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Homemade from the heart?
I enjoy baking and would one day like to do it full-time. I run my business part-time. I make homemade cakes and cookies made to order. I am known for my chocolate chip cookies and homemade pound cakes that come in various flavors, from the classic butter pound cake to my delicious blueberry lemon pound cake, which I recently unveiled by peach flavor for the summer. I am most proud of how many selections of baked goods are offered from homemade from the heart. I want everyone to know that my baked goods are made with love and made to order.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is baking. It brings me so much joy knowing how much people enjoy my cakes and cookies. It has also allowed me to share my love of baking with my granddaughter, allowing me to see the joy she has from baking as well.

I have tried most of the baked goods, enjoy them immensely. Saw him in Abingdon on Tuesday before he ran out. Lucky me!

FYI, his cookies are amazing! Just thinking about those huge, soft chocolate chip pecan cookies is making my taste buds excited!
