Hidden Gems: Meet Mendy Silva of The Silva Whisk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mendy Silva.

Hi Mendy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Baking for me has always been a part of my life. My mom would buy cake mix boxes for me and I would always make cakes or cupcakes for my family in my teens. I always knew I wanted to do something with baking but never knew what exactly I would do.

In 2016, I decided to try out some cake decorating classes at Michaels. I did it for about 6 weeks, once a week and I loved it. That’s when I really got into the cake decorating world and completely fell in love. I started doing orders for coworkers and family at that time and just started working on practicing my skills.

Orders slowly started coming in which was exciting and nerve-wracking that people trusted me enough to do cakes for their special events. Looking back, I have come such a long way with my decorating skills but it has been a fun journey.

Now I am taking about 10-12 orders a weekend! I never would have imagined that this would become my life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Many obstacles when it comes to stepping out of your comfort zone.

I love being pushed into trying new techniques, or flavors but it can also be scary and intimidating. I try to mentally prepare myself before taking on tricky orders and it helps. Also, I never realized how much you have to take care of your body in this career. Your feet, back, and hands hurt most of the time so you need to set some time to get a massage, go for a walk, get a Pedi lol!

I also just recently quit my job in the corporate world to pursue cakes full time. I wasn’t just scared, I was TERRIFIED! But I have been able to balance life and cakes way easier. It’s still a learning process but I’m getting there.

We’ve been impressed with The Silva Whisk, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in cake decorating, and baking. Mainly cakes, both buttercream, and fondant. Cupcakes, cakesicles too.

What sets me apart is that I don’t let others get to me and I also truly love supporting other bakers. Bakers will come to me with questions and I will always answer them. I love helping people whenever I can.

I am very proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and just being the best that I can be.
