Hidden Gems: Meet Mary Smith of Mary’s Whole Life

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Smith.

Hi Mary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After experiencing various mystery symptoms (fatigue, migraines, eczema, unexplained weight loss, and more) after my having my first baby in 2013, I was eventually diagnosed with Celiac disease in 2016. It took almost 3 years and multiple doctors, tests, etc. to figure out what was going on. I had to switch to a 100% gluten-free diet and began documenting my meals & ideas on Instagram. This is when Mary’s Whole Life was born! I decided to start a blog from scratch as a place where I could share my recipes and health journey.

I switched my personal Instagram account over to a business one and changed the name to @maryswholelife, and the rest is history! That was in May 2017. Over the past 5 years, I have grown my IG account to 123,000 followers, have hundreds of thousands of page views on the blog every month, and I also wrote a cookbook in 2020 (Quick Prep Paleo)! I love helping others with making the switch to a gluten-free lifestyle, and also love helping busy people get healthy dinners on the table without a lot of fuss.

Cooking brings me so much joy, and I feel so lucky to be able to do what I love for a living!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been easy. There were LOTS of late nights, struggles, frustration, tears, and self-doubt over the past 5 years. Learning to create a website from scratch is super challenging. I’ve also navigated all of this throughout raising 3 young kids. Balancing mom life and work life (especially when you work from home for yourself) are TOUGH!

I have wanted to give up more than a few times, but have always kept going. There are also a lot of bloggers out there, and it’s easy to fall into the comparison trap. I try to remember that everyone has something special to offer and that even though the market is saturated, what I do matters! I always come back to my “why” – why did I start doing this? What about it makes me happy?

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mary’s Whole Life, LLC?
Mary’s Whole Life LLC is a website where I share gluten-free and dairy-free recipes and my favorite healthy living products and ideas. In addition to gluten-free, I focus on sharing healthy meals that ANYONE can enjoy. I love getting quick, healthy meals on the table with minimal effort. I am most proud of my ability to share meals that are easy enough for even the most novice cook to make in the kitchen!

I believe that health is wealth, and if I can help even just one person feel better by eating healthy meals, then I have done my job! I am also proud of my cookbook, Quick Prep Paleo. I did all of the photography for the book! It has 72 new recipes (not on the blog) + 3 reader favorites.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love Max Lugavere’s podcast The Genius Life, and then for fun, I love true crime podcasts like The Going West Podcast! One of my favorite apps to use when traveling is Find Me Gluten Free.

You can search for Celiac-friendly restaurants in various locations. It’s been a lifesaver when I am traveling to a new location. I’ve found so many great safe spots to eat using that app!
