Hidden Gems: Meet LaTonya Mosley of DKD and Associates Event Planning and Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTonya Mosley.

Hi LaTonya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, I thank you so much for this opportunity. I am LaTonya Mosley the Owner and Lead Planner and Designer for DKD and Associates, Event Planning and Management, LLC. I grew up in Ohio and my mom would cater events for the church and family events. I loved helping her and my interest grew more and more as I got older. In 1989, I moved to the Washington-Metropolitan area and began a career with the Federal Government. Over the years, I moved throughout my agency finally settling in and making my mark in Human Resources. I managed the planning and execution of two of the agencies most prestigious awards ceremonies (one was quarterly and the other was yearly). I am a wife and mother of three biological sons as well as two bonus daughters and a bonus son. Throughout my children’s lives, I was the parent who would volunteer to run the end-of-the-year sports banquets. I am the friend who, when invited to events, always ensures everyone has what they need. I planned both of my weddings, my son and soon to be daughter in love’s baby shower. When I attend weddings, I will pick out things I would do differently. One day my husband said, “Why don’t you open your own business?”

In 2014, I launched DKD and Associates Event Planning and Management, LLC (the DKD is an acronym for my boys DeAndre, Kahlil, and D’Marcus). I have over two decades of hands-on experience coordinating events ranging from corporate retirement ceremonies to elaborate proposals. My company focuses on planning and managing events of varying sizes and purposes. My expertise is in understanding what it takes to make sure things run efficiently logistically, keeping everything within the events allocated budget, and ensuring the event itself runs smoothly. In July 2020, I retired from my government position and partnered with my best friend, James “Tony” Hollins, owner of Jamarcal Management. We merged our companies in order to provide our clients with full-scale event planning. We can handle everything from the planning of the event to the officiant, DJ, photographers, and caterers. DKD and Associates provides our clients with wonderful, memorable experiences.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not… It has not been a smooth road. Retiring from the government to work full time on my business took a major hit with COVID-19. We lost clients and with venues not back to full capacity, the clients opting to cancel their event, or they decided to have their event virtual. This challenged me to think way outside my comfort zone for ways to create safe and smaller events, as well as, virtual events. I have had to learn a new way to market the business in order to build clientele. During this time, I have taken on a great mentor David Tutera. He has assisted in helping me understand and redirect my focus on the business. Having David as a mentor is truly an honor. I loved watching his show and wishing I could be as good as him. Now I am able to learn and have conversations with him twice a month.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about DKD and Associates Event Planning and Management, LLC?

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have to thank my husband Joseph Mosley III, our children DeAndre, Jada, Kahlil, Jasmine, Joseph IV, and D’Marcus, as well as, my parents Jessie Mitchell and Kenneth Robinson Sr. for supporting me in this dream. I would also like to thank my mentors Debra Taylor of Taylor Made Planning Incorporates and Mr. David Tutera for all of their encouragement, knowledge sharing, and preparing me for the experiences ahead of me. The last person I would like to thank is my business partner and best friend James “Tony” Hollins of Jamarcal Management. He has believed in me and supported me in every aspect of this business. When he asked me to merge our businesses to bring our clients more to offer it was a big step for the both of us, however, it has been a wonderful move. If it was not for Tony, I would not have been afforded the opportunity to be doing this interview.
