Hidden Gems: Meet Jenny Bench of Skin Deep Aesthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Bench.

Hi Jenny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my business in July of 2020 with the nudging of a supportive friend. Like most people, my current job was not stable and had opened back up with barely enough customers. I was seven months pregnant at the time and had two other children. I decided that it couldn’t get any worse financially and decided it was sink or swim. I was wrong about the not getting any worse financially part. I poured everything into my skincare business. I share a space (with my supportive friend) in Fed Hill. I perform facials, waxing, and wellness services. My friend does massage and lashes, so we complement each other’s service menus. I recently branched out and have a small suite in old Ellicott city as well. I have been slowly building and growing my business since July. I’ve been in the spa industry for over 15 years and really wanted to use my knowledge and skills the way I wanted to. It’s been a real roller coaster. I’m still learning and growing. I’m glad I took the leap though.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been far from smooth. I did not want to go into debt to start my business, so I used all of my savings. Or what was left after the pandemic hit. Honestly, I wasn’t confident in my ability to run a business. I didn’t want the debt to remain as a reminder if I had failed. There was a lot I did not account for. The cost of my daily supplies for skin care and waxing increased quite a bit. From gloves to product packaging and shipping. I was very pregnant when I opened my business. I worked up until I went into labor and only took a week off after having the baby. I was afraid to lose momentum. I have days where I am completely booked and days where I have no one. We are still in a pandemic and I am still a new business. I have had days where I’ve actually cried because I was so happy to have a new appointment on my book.
