Hidden Gems: Meet Donna Brown of Sadona Salon + Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Brown.

Hi Donna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a young woman, I learned early on how important it is to take care of your skin. At one point in life, I struggled tremendously with skin issues, trying different modalities and visiting doctors and dermatologists. It was difficult to have this issue as a young person, and I was very determined to find the right answer for my personal skin health and appearance.

For me and many others, the answer came as a combination of internal and external factors. It takes professional treatments, a healthy diet, and high-quality, clean products used with a good daily regimen. This is an answer to not only good skin but good health in general. By following these guidelines, one can see a healthy difference in hair, skin, nails, and overall wellness. Also, I have always been interested in science, ingredients, and how the two combine to enhance one’s skin. My education took me in the direction of science and esthetics. Then, for nearly 20 years I helped to start up and operate a small family-owned business in a different industry.

After that, I worked as an esthetician, learning all I could in this fabulous industry of salon and spa. As I travel far and near, I am always intrigued to learn about other modalities, protocols, ingredients, and trends. Finally, I was able to use my education, business background, and experience to begin the journey of imagining all things Sadona Salon + Spa.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has been a journey full of rewards like no other thing I have done in my life. There were many situations to learn how to navigate and with every challenge, a reward of overcoming and learning has been invaluable.

My husband and I were able to purchase the building we operate Sadona Salon + Spa from. The building is historic and was in a total state of disrepair when we began. I was able to find a fabulous team to help guide every step of the way made up of an interior designer, builder, and an industry specialized designer. We faced everything together as a team and found the answers together.

Another new territory for me to find my way through was management. Working my entire life for small businesses, I was never in a management position. In this industry, however, there is a plethora of wonderful vendors who offer courses, seminars, and workshops where I was able to make good contacts and find answers for anything I have encountered.

Lastly, as a small business owner/operator, I have had to fast-track my learning for all things social media. Fortunately, I have found good resources to help with it and also help me learn so I am able to do more of it myself at this point.

We’ve been impressed with Sadona Salon + Spa, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Sadona Salon + Spa, we offer full-service luxury spa and salon treatments in a newly renovated three-story historic building amidst the charm of downtown Annapolis. Within this space, we offer everything from hair cuts, color and specialty treatments, nail care, makeup, spray tans, a vast array of spa treatments, and even a meeting space for small groups to gather for events. All of our products are USA-focused, have a high efficacy rating, and are sought after in this industry for being exceptionally “clean” as well. As a matter of fact, one of the compliments we often receive when guests visit is how wonderful the aroma is in this building and it does not smell like a typical salon.

One other thing that sets us apart from others is our variety of exciting spa treatment offerings. As a small business, I have personally designed and/or collaborated with associates working here on all of the treatments. If there is new information that will improve treatment, our team is quite forward-thinking and is able to change and adapt protocol quickly as the need demands. Therefore, we believe our offering of treatments throughout Sadona is sure to please anyone who loves all things salon and spa. Consider yourself invited to peruse our online offering of treatments!

As a brand, one thing for sure is that all are welcome and all are treated equally. We love what we do and we love positive feedback for making everyone’s day a bit more brighter and beautiful than when they walked through our door. Guest service is our top priority. Although we do have a lot of visitors as is the nature of being located in the capital of our state, we do have a strong base of regular local (and regular traveling) guests. It is quite lovely to see our regular guests return time after time, year after year, and get to know them and even their friends and families. The familiarity of our guests is incredibly rewarding.

When people come to Sadona, we love to exceed expectations with everything from sanitation, decor, treatments, and guest service. We aim to please and we love to do so!

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
On a personal level, I have a hobby farm at my home where I raise chickens and have just begun beekeeping. That always seems to surprise people and for me, it is one of my places of zen to connect with mother earth and all of her little creatures and it sure is fun to talk about.
