Hidden Gems: Meet Dominique Farmer of iVacay with Neek and Freedom Farmer Estate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Farmer.

Hi Dominique, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started as a serial Entrepreneur in 2011. After graduating Edmondson-Westside High School in 2007. I attended a few colleges trying to find exactly where I fit in, however, I just couldn’t find the major that spoke my language. In 2011, I started selling hair after my daughter was born. I figured it would work since my major was Cosmetology in high school. From there, I branched off to selling clothes which started my love to help people become beautiful. In 2015, I started J. Michaela, a women’s boutique named after my daughter Jelani Michaela. From there, I started doing some research in the travel business but never really settled down.

In 2016, I opened my own brick and mortar for J. Michaela which allowed me to see my vision come to life.

In 2018, I took my first long-distance international trip to Cape Town, South Africa. I traveled alone on this journey. It was there I knew traveling could change the mindsets of people and that was something I wanted to bless others with.

In 2019, after walking away from a seven years domestic violent marriage, I began to find who Dominique was and that led me to writing a 21-day devotional titled “Just 4 Today”. In 2020, I finally launched my travel business named “iVacay with Neek” which allows me to make everyday people’s dream vacations become a reality.

Now, in 2021, I have been able to give away many vacations, help others see the world even through a pandemic and help others become travel agents.

My travel business has allowed me to invest into other businesses such as real estate, Airbnb business, Turo and now business coaching where I am able to help others become business owners.

I know throughout this journey there’s much I’ve learned and there’s much more to come.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s no such thing as smooth sailing when it comes to entrepreneurship. My journey was hard but the sacrifices were worth it. I went through loss of business, loss of friendships, loss of marriage and of course, loss of money. Yet, I stayed put on the trial. I was determined to change the trajectory of my family. I am determined to make sure my kids don’t have to struggle the way I did.

During my time of find myself, I was homeless, had to share one meal with my kids, had to sleep in my car while my kids were with my at the time husband’s mother. I couldn’t see doing business or even risking it. I struggle with fear of failure. I was scared that if I took money out of my savings to start a business, I would mess up what I was trying to keep us from. That was being homeless again. However, finding strength in God, believing in myself, and pushing for my children is why I am where I am today.

As you know, we’re big fans of iVacay with Neek and Freedom Farmer Estate. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
iVacay with Neek is a travel agency that helps dream vacations become a reality. We over help with vacation bookings as well as those who desire is to become a travel agent.

Freedom Farmer Estate is our business that helps other business owners/entrepreneurs boom in passive income.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Just do it. I know it’s scary but do it scared. It’s the only way you will develop the courage, strength and determination that you desire.

Actually, because I was raised by my mother, my uncle and my grandmother who are entrepreneurs in their own right, I actually was able to have it cultivated. However, because I was so busy trying to fit in and not accept that it was absolutely okay to be unique, different and creative, I ran away from what I knew. I say to the ones beginning flow with what’s in your gut. Flow with who God created you to be.
