Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Young.
Hi Alexis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved children and their families. From a very young age, I would take every opportunity to babysit. I loved hearing people’s stories and watching parents love their children. While I was in college, I began working as a labor and postpartum doula.
At that time, I started my business, Your Journey Doula Services where I learned such an incredible amount about newborns and all things baby-related. I gradually got more certifications and exposure to a diverse range of experiences. I was working while attending school full time. I have always enjoyed connecting with people and helping them to know that their children are safe and loved.
There is so much trust that goes into leaving your children in the care of someone else. I typically worked with medically needy babies as well as multiples. I would teach families how to operate their medical devices and help them adjust to all aspects of parenthood. Attending births as a labor doula had a special impact on my life as I had the opportunity to be a part of families welcoming the most important members of their households. I opened my school, Your Journey Nursery & Preschool, in March of 2018 when I was 7 months pregnant with my first child.
Since then, we have grown incredibly quickly and I have been able to meet so many little humans that have helped to enrich my life in so many ways. I am thankful to the families every time they give us the opportunity to watch their children grow. It is an honor and a pleasure. I love that we get to be a part of their journey and nurture them in this phase of their lives with the hope to set them up for so much more sweetness to come.
The goal at our school is to love and protect the children and teach them to be kind humans who embrace diversity. We want them to be excited about learning. We accomplish this through outdoor exploration, hands-on activities, and opportunities to bring in relevant community resources to contribute to our learning. We aim to build genuine connections with families and facilitate open communication so that we can work as a team to best provide for the children in this cool and critical period in their lives.
I wake up excited each day. I get to spend life with little people with robust personalities who always are ready to roll along with my enthusiasm. The children teach us so much more than we could ever teach them. Most importantly, I have had the opportunity to meet talented and dedicated teachers that I am so proud to have on our team.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been far from a smooth road. One of the largest struggles has been opening a new location in the middle of a pandemic. The stress increases when worrying about the health and well-being of the children and staff. It’s also a learning curve to help children adjust to wearing masks and having to distance themselves from one another.
The other struggle has been waiting for county processes as we’ve expanded. For example, I completely gutted and renovated a building and had extensive work done to include a fire sprinkler system and that was a learning curve for me!
I’m the type of person who always has new plans in the work so being patient is hard when families want childcare that we have to wait to provide them based on factors outside of my control.
As you know, we’re big fans of Your Journey Nursery & Preschool. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a private preschool that provides child care services and education for children ages 6 weeks through 5th grade. We provide before and after school services as well as a summer camp for our school-aged children. What sets us apart from others is passion. It is a wholesome love and complete awe of children and their happiness.
We want the children to be silly and smiley and give them opportunities to feel independent, appreciated, and thrilled. We have a true appreciation for childhood and the importance of play. What I want readers to know is that my business is another one of my children. I never stop thinking of ways to improve. I unreasonably stress myself out when someone goes home without their favorite blankie and I am always thinking of ways we can try to make parents’ lives easier.
I know what it means to love your children, how important they are in our lives, and how they rock our world in all the best ways. That is what fuels our school and will always be our core as we implement opportunities for learning.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality that is most important to my success is that I don’t believe anything is outside of my reach. I believe it’s just a matter of figuring out how to achieve it.
