Exploring Life & Business with Ted and Brittany Meade of Park Home

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted and Brittany Meade.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We met at East Carolina University, where we both went to school. Ted majored in Business Management, and Brittany majored in Interior Design. Ted has had a mix of jobs, including sales, personal training, and working for a government contractor. Brittany has mostly worked in kitchen and bath design. About five years ago we opened a franchised DIY studio, so that was our focus for quite some time.

At the end of 2021, we were looking for another business opportunity and came across the store we eventually took over, Park Home. The timing worked out, and it made sense to take it on, especially because of Brittany’s design background. We purchased the business at the end of February, were closed for March to prepare to reopen, and reopened on April 2nd. The original owners, Heather and Scott Summers, had the store for about 5 years before selling it to us.

They did a great job, and we’re happy to be able to keep the store going, in such a great community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a pretty smooth road, luckily, regarding Park Home.

One of the most difficult things so far has been to be able to accurately gauge how long it will take for products to arrive, to ensure we have the right amount of products in the store at any one time, but we’ve been getting a better handle on that. Another challenge has been figuring out what products make the most sense to order and carry.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Park Home is a home decor, furniture, and gift store in Severna Park, Maryland, in the Park Plaza shopping center.

We strive to curate unique products for this place, with an emphasis on a lot of nautical pieces, popular in the area due to the proximity of the water. However, we try to offer products that don’t just fall under the nautical style, because people around here have their homes decorated in many different styles.

Some of our most popular items are artwork, pillows, candles, and unique gifts. Gurgle Pots, pitchers in the shape of a fish that makes a gurgling sound are one of our best-selling items. They come in three different sizes and many fun colors.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
We are a part of the Severna Park Chamber of Commerce, which has connected us with a lot of people and other businesses in the community. There are lots of options though these days for finding a mentor or networking.

I think just trying to get to know other business owners and individuals in the community goes a long way. Offering to partner with a business can help both businesses tremendously immediately and in the long run.
