Exploring Life & Business with Lauricia Montane of Montane Manor Assisted Living

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauricia Montane.

Hi Lauricia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Montane Manor Assisted Living was inspired by my mother who has 20+ years of experience in caring for seniors. Throughout the years, I would visit or volunteer at the facilities she worked in and saw the passion she has for this work. I always knew I wanted to work for myself but wasn’t sure what business I wanted to start. One day I sat with my mother, telling her about a college assignment I had to develop a business plan but didn’t know what to do it on and then she expressed how she always wanted her own assisted living. So that’s when I decided I can make both our dreams come true!

It has officially been six years since I graduated from Temple University with Bachelor in Business Administration, concentration in Entrepreneurship and I am finally up and running and almost at capacity since getting my first resident in January 2021. My journey to get to where I am today has been a “roller coaster ride”, at some point I completely gave up the idea because I had no idea how to get the financing or property to get started. I was working in retail management and then in banking as a supervisor and during that whole time dreaming about starting my own business. One day I was at a real estate meeting, real estate was an industry that piqued my interest when a speaker came to talk about his experience in the residential assisted living industry. I took that as a sign and the fire was ignited inside of me to go full force into getting things going to get my assisted living off the ground.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The major challenge I came across was obtaining the financing for this business. I surely had to get educated, do much research, network, sacrificing and especially getting creative to get things going. The one thing that was clear was that I had to work a job while I worked on starting my business not only to pay my everyday bills but to be able to qualify for financing and save towards my business goals. When I started doing the math, I thought I was going to pass out with how long it would take to try to finance my business on my own.

This is when I started to do my research and make as many connections as I could to figure out how to get started sooner. I learned that I didn’t have to use all of my own capital, but I could use “other people’s money”, such as loans and credit cards. I started building my credit and realized the power and opportunities good credit could afford me when used responsibly, of course. I was able to purchase my huge home in which I am currently running the assisted living out of and fund the furnishing, upgrades to the home, etc. Sidebar, I do live in my business along with my mother for now while I grow the business which has been a sacrifice in itself since it is a 24/7 business.

Currently, the challenge I face is making sure I don’t forget about caring for myself and enjoying my personal life outside of the business while caring for my residents. I have learned that you can’t be any good for others if you aren’t good within yourself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Montane Manor is an assisted living facility that knows the importance of finding the best care that meets the needs and desires of seniors. We are a small eight-bed home that allows us to give better care and attention to our residents individually. Our priority is to ensure that seniors are in a safe and caring environment that promotes independence and dignity. Our services include providing seniors assistance with activities of daily living, medication administration, three meals and snacks daily, housekeeping, and laundry.

What I love about our assisted living is that it has an intimate home-like feeling which provides our residents with a warm welcome and easier adjustment from coming from their homes or other “big box” senior homes. Unfortunately, I have heard many horror stories about assisted living facilities and how they are run, which in turn gives it a bad name. But what sets us apart from other assisted living is the love and care we pour into our residents. When you walk in and see how we operate, you can tell that this isn’t just a means to make money but it’s a passion for us, from the furnishing to the food we serve, it is all done with our residents in mind.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I enjoy listening to speakers on YouTube on a daily basis that focuses on the law of attraction, manifestation, mindfulness, meditating, and inspiration. This includes Abraham Hicks, Eckhart Tolle, Oprah, Steve Harvey, Les Brown, Lisa Nichols, and the list goes on. Putting to practice the things I learn from these speakers is what has kept me grounded, sane, and motivated to keep going no matter obstacles come my way because you can only grow and get better from those experiences.
