Exploring Life & Business with Kerry Vela of Charm City Trykers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Vela.

Hi Kerry, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Charm City Trykers, Inc. is a local non-profit that helps children with different abilities receive an adaptive tryke customized specifically to each child’s unique and individual needs. Our local chapter was started when two physical therapists identified the challenges of obtaining adaptive equipment that is fun and inclusive and recognized the need for a local chapter of National Ambucs. Because why shouldn’t every child be able to ride a tryke? And thus, Charm City Trykers, Inc. was established.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Fundraising is our way of purchasing the adaptive trykes for our children – which can range up to $1,000.00. Charm City Trykers, Inc. had its first fundraiser right before the start of COVID-19. Since then, we’ve had to be creative in ways that we can continue to raise funding to purchase trykes for children with different abilities. Parents and children were relying on obtaining their adaptive tryke during COVID-19 because it was a way they could still participate and increase strength and endurance because in-person therapies were limited during COVID-19. In addition, we have seen delays in delivery of parts of the adaptive trykes due to nationwide shortages of certain parts. Finally, our original plan was to have large give-away days for children to receive their trykes to make it a special and memorable event. These have been on a smaller scale given precautions taken due to COVID-19 and the medical complexities of each child receiving a tryke.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our team at Charm City Trykers, Inc. include a diverse background in rehabilitation services including physical therapy and occupational therapy as well as web design and artistry. In addition, our team of bike engineers know how to adapt the trykes to fit the unique needs of each individual child.

We, at Charm City Trykers, Inc., are most proud of our ability to support our local community and provide inclusiveness to children of different abilities through adaptive trykes. We love seeing children get on a tryke that was built specifically for them and enjoying the freedom that comes with independently riding a tryke. We are also extremely proud that we are able to fully cover the cost of adaptive trykes for children with medical complexities that may otherwise not be able to afford such a luxury.

Charm City Trykers, Inc. will cover the cost of adaptive trykes for children with different abilities. We accept donations to help fund adaptive trykes through our social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Supporters can provide donations through AmazonSmile and select National Ambucs, Inc.
