Exploring Life & Business with Janis Bailey of Sol Journey Travel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janis Bailey.

Hi Janis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Ever since my first international vacation back in 2005 to Jamaica, I knew I wanted to be part of the travel industry in some way. I really didn’t start traveling until my late 20’s and I couldn’t believe how much of the world I was missing out on. I love learning and experiencing new places, cultures, activities, and more. For me, travel is deeper than just doing it for the ‘gram. It is part of my self-care routine. I started my travel business back in 2017 after a layoff from a job I had for over five years. I was unemployed for almost a whole year but I used that time to learn about the things I was passionate about and exploring opportunities for myself. I have never been interested in the corporate world, it doesn’t fit who I am as a person at all, so I took a chance on myself with my own business. It was slow going as I was focused on learning as much as possible about how to run a business and be an advocate for encouraging travel as well as creating travel experiences around the world. Business grew and then came 2020 where travel pretty much came to a halt. It was a learning experience for sure but I’m still here and excited that people are getting back to traveling.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship is definitely not easy. You have to have the right mindset and always be learning. Best thing I was able to do in 2020 was connect with other travel advisors who are committed to growing their business and learning new things along the way. Things are constantly changing in the travel industry and we have to be ready to educate our clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a certified travel advisor and owner of Sol Journey Travel. As a travel advisor, I help discerning travelers go beyond the internet and design custom vacations that fit their travel style. Travel planning can easily lead to a bad experience when you don’t know where to start or what to look for in planning. There is a lot to navigate and without certain knowledge doing it yourself can cause your vacation to become stressful and dissatisfying. It shouldn’t be that way. When I plan vacations for my clients, they feel excited and ready for an authentic experience!

I specialize in beach vacations with a focus on couple’s getaways (to include honeymoons and anniversaries) and LGBTQ travel. Sol Journey Travel represents the explorer, the lovers of the sun and ocean, and the romantic with a touch of luxury and adventure.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t know about luck, maybe I’ve been lucky a few times in life. I just believe in the Universe and trust that it works in my best interest in life and business.
