Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Brinkley, MBA.
Hi Devin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have worked in healthcare for over 13 years, in my most recent role, I was put in charge of social media as my “other duties as assigned”. As one of the youngest people on the team and the most active on social media, I was the first choice. I began to train many of our other team members on how to use certain platforms and how to grow their accounts. One day, one of my colleagues suggested that I start consulting. I thought he was crazy and put it at the back of my mind.
In 2019, my husband started a food truck, No Sauce QUE, and we built our customer based primarily by social media and word of mouth. I really got into social media marketing to get the word out about the truck, events, and the menu. We built a loyal following and even won best BBQ and best Caterer in our county last year.
It took me another year, but I finally decided to launch Creative Gravity Consulting, LLC (CGC) in February 2020. I saw how important social media was in the business world, and people began to ask my husband who was doing his social media. Then BOOM! COVID hits and I instantly regretted my decision, thinking I would fail. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Though the pandemic has been a terrible experience, my business grew very quickly because many businesses had to pivot and provide products and services online. Wanting to reach larger audiences, a lot of businesses began to invest in social media marketing. Since last March, I have helped several businesses expand their reach, grow their following and convert followers into customers (or listeners for my podcast clients). I have grown so much in the past year that I’ve had add three additional people to my team.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Things grew so quickly that I did not have time to implement all of the processes and strategies that I would’ve liked before really diving into things. I genuinely wanted to help people and took on clients before I had everything in order. I also started out doing ALL THE THINGS, social media management, business consulting, branding and website design. I took on way too much and quickly became burned out. It got to the point that I even considered closing my business so that I could BREATH. However, I worked with an amazing Business Strategist (Sasha Willis) who was actually MY first client. She helped me automate a lot of the administrative aspects of my business and niche down. I now focus solely on social media marketing, which is my passion.
We’ve been impressed with Creative Gravity Consulting, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a women-led social media agency specializing in social media marketing, management and training. We help businesses of all sizes organically promote and grow their businesses online and convert their followers to clients.
I was a healthcare trainer for 4-years and I believe that being able to train people in way that they can understand and retain the information is very important. Many people want to be able to do things on their own and just need to know the ins and outs. I also have experience in both small businesses as well as the corporate world which are completely different.
In addition to training and coaching, we offer various levels of social media services. Full social media management, where we do it all (social media strategy, hashtag research, creating content, posting and engaging with followers). We also offer content curation for people who want to be a little more hands-on but need more creative direction (we create the visual posts as well as the captions, hashtags and provide training on how to build your following), we offer a social media calendar with prompts for those that need a little inspiration and Social Media Audits where we take a deep dive into your social media account and access growth opportunities and way that you can optimize your online presence.
We have packages at various different price points for people that may be in different places in their business. We really want to help entrepreneurs.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I feel like you HAVE to take risks in business. Being an entrepreneur is all about taking risks. With that being said, you have to take risks wisely. Risk mitigation is crucial when running a business. You should try to plan for all possible disasters in advance so that if they do happen, it lessens the negative impact. Of course, we cannot see into the future so there is no way to know every possible thing that may go wrong — but having a contingency plan in place for the most likely things will save you a lot of heartache. I feel like people who take risks have a competitive advantage because you may find an opportunity that others are too afraid of. Never stay complacent.
