Exploring Life & Business with Cristina Artis of Hairoun Haircare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Artis.

Hi Cristina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve always felt called to create. I love seeing ideas in my head and bringing them to life. At 11 years old, I started my very first “business” making and selling items made out of duct tape.

This was at a time when many retailers began offering a wide range of colors, designs, and patterns of duct tape, with which you could create anything you could imagine. So I began creating products as well as making a Facebook page and Wix website to showcase my items where people could purchase them. I was so excited, I loved being able to express my creativity in this way. But being 11, I lost interest relatively quickly.

While I was in college, my hair was my newest interest, and I enjoyed creating different styles, wearing wigs, growing it to its healthiest and longest length, and helping my friends with theirs as well. At the same time after years of never gaining internships, jobs, or opportunities I desired, I decided to turn my love for haircare into a business that became something greater than I thought it could be.

In December 2019, I commissioned my college friend to create a logo suite for my business, not being too sure of what I wanted it to be called, or what it would become, she did and I launched in March 2020 – the beginning of a global pandemic. Hair factories were closed, and hair and lace were scarce but I kept going, offering my services to the best of my ability.

In the back of my mind, I knew I needed a lower-priced item to not only keep business going but was also valuable in delivering something that would solve a particular issue for people like me: Durable, reversible, adjustable satin bonnets that wouldn’t fall off your head in your sleep. They instantly became a hit with my audience for their pretty colors, smooth and shiny surface, and practical, long-term possible use without losing elasticity or falling apart.

As of 2022 I’ve been able to ship to over 40 states and 3 countries. While my business continues to expand it is also a wonderful reminder that I was able to gain experience and opportunity in a time when I was given none.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Business always comes with challenges.

The demand and desire to expand my business with new products and designs definitely was met with difficulty in the area of funding.

It is still a challenge but with learning about business credit and working on tracking my expenses it is great to have a better idea of always knowing where my business stands.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
