Exploring Life & Business with Charlee, Leeyah, Micah and Jordyn from Twice as Nice Shaved Ice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlee, Leeyah, Micah and Jordyn from Twice as Nice Shaved Ice.

Hi ladies, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Our business name is Twice as Nice Shaved Ice. We are sisters Charlee (13), Leeyah (13), Micah (12) and Jordyn (9). We’ve been in business for three years. Our mom is always looking for ways to keep us busy and involved in different things. She challenged us to come up with a business idea that would help us earn money and invest for our future. So we decided to sell snowballs. We initially started our business with tables and a pop-up tent. Our first event was a private birthday party for our cousin Tristan. For every event, we would have to load, unload, and reload all of our heavy equipment and supplies into our dad’s pickup truck and it was a lot of work. We’ve recently expanded to a new mobile shaved ice trailer. It is easier to move around from one event to another. We are able to handle larger events and market our business more.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It isn’t always easy. There were some events where we would prepare to serve hundreds of people and no one would show up to the event. That would be discouraging to us because instead of making money, we actually lost money. But events like that teach us patience and perseverance. We also had an instance where we were serving shaved ice at a baseball tournament. We had a huge line of customers and our snowball machine stopped working. We had to shut down for the day. Now we have two machines just in case one breaks down again. We learned that sometimes everything is not going to work out as planned but you keep showing up and try to do better every chance you get.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are sisters and with the help of our parents, we have been operating Twice as Nice Shaved Ice since 2018. We were inspired to begin this business by our love of sweets and bringing joy to others. In 2021, we launched the first Twice as Nice Shaved Ice Mobile Trailer. Now we can bring the full shaved ice experience directly to our customers. We hope through our business to inspire and show young people that they can start their own business too.

The best thing about our business is that we put smiles on people’s faces.  We also take pride in being able to offer an affordable treat for families to have.  It’s nice to see people’s reaction when they see the size of our snowballs.  It is a great opportunity to provide a little joy.  What sets us apart is the ability to provide great customer service despite our age and differences of opinions as sisters.  At times we may disagree but our parents often remind us that this is our business and we have to make it work together.  Our regular location is 4334 Mountain Rd in Pasadena, MD but we do Pop-Up events all throughout Anne Arundel County, Baltimore and surrounding areas. We also do festivals and private events. We post our schedule weekly and our daily location on our Facebook and Instagram pages, Twice as Nice Shaved Ice. We also have a youtube channel called Twice as Nice Shaved Ice, where we document what it’s like to run a shaved ice business. You can also book us for events on our website twiceasniceshavedice.com.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t think we would call it luck but we are definitely blessed to have a strong family and support system. Both of our parents work hard to make sure we have the resources necessary to run this business. Our mom found our trailer for sale on craigslist in Delaware. Our parents are not what you would consider risk-takers but they really stepped out on faith to purchase it for us. The trailer has really helped us improve and grow our business. Our grandparents and our uncle BJ are our greatest marketers. They are always sharing our business with other people. Most of the events we do come from the suggestion of family and friends. We are truly grateful for all of the people who encourage us every day.
