Daily Inspiration: Meet Vu Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vu Nguyen.

Hi Vu, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up as a visual artist from the age of five thru early college. (Painter, illustrator, sculptures, etc.) My high school art teacher got sick for six months of my senior year in high school so my college art portfolio lacked direction. I did not make it into an art school or an art program.

I went to Montgomery College for one semester and transferred to UMBC. I struggled there, got a bad grade, so I went back to Montgomery College to figure out what I was going to do. I gave up on art and pursued a degree in Economics. I transferred to University of Maryland college park and got my B.S. in Economics.

Leaving college, I had no career direction and got a job as an Accountant (this was 2008). I hated the job, but I got a paycheck.

Late 2013 my wife and I got married and she wanted a fancy wedding videographer. At first, I said “no”, it’s not necessary but in the end, I had to do it. After receiving our wedding film back, I was really inspired by it and decided to buy a camera just to film family moments, vacations, etc. I filmed a couple of weddings for my friends for free and by 2016 someone reached out to pay me to film their wedding.

I started to build my wedding film company while still working as an accountant full time.

In late 2018 I was hired by a Marketing Firm to be their film and photography director (using my Wedding films as my resume). I officially quit accounting in 2018.

Today, I film about 30 or so wedding per year, I work full-time for the Marketing company during the week, and I have a successful YouTube channel about filmmaking with over 10,000 subscribers.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been surprisingly smooth for me in videography. I work a lot, but I’m religious, and God has been on my side all this time. He has never let me down.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in wedding filmmaking and corporate film and photography. I’m proud of being able to do this without going to film school. I am able to provide for my family while my wife can stay home and take care of our kids.

I can do things quickly and on the fly. I don’t require too much preparation. I treat weddings as a documentary and not “event coverage”. I film to tell a story, not to cover an event.
