Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamarra Fleming.
Tamarra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The love of design has always been in me since age 10 with my grandmother Helen teaching me about home decor. My family always entertained and my grandmother taught me how to properly set tables and create an atmosphere of beauty. In my 20’s I coordinated and decorated close friends and families events but got burnt out because people didn’t take my craft seriously, so I took a 15-year break. 2015, I legally stepped into the business world with opening my own office/fitness studio called the DTF Studio on Harford Rd in Parkville, MD after being a full-time fitness instructor for 10 years, owner of a weight loss company, and motivational coach. I was using my building strictly for fitness until one of my students asked to rent it for an event. After booking to her, more people started booking and I changed the name to DTF Studio & Rental Venue. Even though I was in the health and fitness field, my true passion was decorating. Well in 2016, I was pushed back into decorating after one of the venue renter’s decorators bailed out on her. She was crying and my mother asked me to help her so I did without wanted to expose my talent. My client loved my design and shared it to social media after I told her not to. Well God said to me, “You can’t hide the gift that I gave you”. After God hit me, Diva’s Designs & Events was established. My fitness name is Diva T so it was easy for me to come up with a name.
DDE is now a licensed and registered wedding and event planning business in Baltimore, MD. We specialize in wedding and event design, event management services, floral design, balloon services, party supplies, and rental venue services. We offer other services through our broad list of partnerships with various vendors.
I, Tamarra K. Fleming (a.k.a. Diva T), is a fashionista that loves designing and putting smiles on people’s face through my work and creativity. I wanted to move my business to a professional level with luxury events, so I decided to attend design college. I received my degree accreditation and certification as a Design Specialist & Florist Event Specialist from the Institue of Wedding & Event Design (IWED) and I became certificates as a Wedding and Event Planner from the New York Institute of Art and Design. My other academic accomplishment includes a Bachelors of Science and Dual Masters of Science Degrees from Coppin State University and the University of Baltimore. Tamarra is an exceptional owner of DTF Studio & Rental Venue.
My goal with my business is to bring my client’s event to life with uniqueness, elogue, charm, and beauty that will likely take their breath away. I strive to put smiles and tears of joy on my clients’ faces. I love, eat and breathe my decor world. I always thank and give God praises for the gift He has given to me. I use my gift to mentor others in the business. My team and I always support our community and other small businesses owners and entrepreneurs with our time and financially when needed. My business is God’s business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have good days and bad days but it’s always a learning lesson. The only problem I can say that I have encountered is the public not understanding that decorating and event planning cost, it’s not a hobby. I went to school to become a professional and I want to be treated just like a lawyer or doctor is treated. I’m always giving and I do have clients that respect my worth but it’s still many that don’t respect me or my colleagues.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Before becoming a designer, I love drawing, painter, sculpting, and setting up a space. I love color and unique objects. Becoming a decorator was easy for me because I see things differently. I am very known for my graphic and theme events but I always love luxury events with beautiful floral arrangements. I specialized in the areas of table designs, floral, ballooning, ceiling draping, building props, and custom centerpieces.
We are a group of black female business owners that want to share our real life experiences of family, career, relationships and business to help motivate and push other business owners, mothers, fathers and everyday people. It’s our own Baltimore reality show but real reality and not the fake reality you see on TV that we will discuss on our show called BOSS & the Square Table or when we are out in the community. We will be doing personal blogging, hosting our own live tapings of us on IG, FB, YouTube, discussions on Clubhouse. We started a page 3 days ago and it’s has already reached close to 500.
I’m also the CEO of Living Proof Weight Loss LLC and Diva T Fitness. I’m a certified Zumba Instructor, group fitness coach and personal trainer that started a fitness brand 11 years ago. I was one of the first black females to start an all natural weight loss business in Baltimore in 2015 when I opened my wellness office. My wellness office offers all natural products, wellness coaching, fitness and self care services with my partners Relaxation Rubs by Sonja Harris and Living Life Strong Coaching by Paulette Livingston. My wellness/fitness business was the door that opened my other businesses because my clientele followed and supported my decorating/rental business.
