Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelia Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing in high school. My English teacher used to give the class a home assignment which was to create a story using our vocabulary words. My story always got picked. I fell in love with writing. I would say about age 25 I wrote my first play called “Mr. Man Mr. Dog.” I was still newly married with two small kids. With that said, I did nothing with it. I had to put it aside. I had a family to take care of. I hadn’t mastered the task of doing both.
As several years passed, my brother-in-law saw the play. He proofread it, edited and after several rewrites, it was premiered in 2006. I started my company BAAS PRODUCTIONS in 2009. I have written and produced and directed about 11 productions and one full-length movie. To date, I’ve filmed several short films. A lot of the projects can be seen on the Engagenetwork Comcast channel 75, YouTube, and Facebook.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. If it had not been for the support of my family, I would have given up writing a long time ago. They would say things like “it’s your passion and not theirs” you know the vision for your project” and etc. I know feedback is not always positive, but things that folks say are harsh at times. Things like “you don’t know what you are doing” I know now that you supposed to take what you need and keep it moving. I encountered a lot of closed doors when looking for venues for my productions.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work for a local telephone company as a Sales Representative. That’s has been my profession for thirty + years. My passion is writing. I love being able to produce and direct my own projects. I guess I would say I’m proud of my accomplishments of juggling a 9-5 and pursuing my dreams. That’s a good question what sets me apart from others – hmmm let me think. I would say that I’m told that I have a lot of patience.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m currently working on taking BAAS PRODUCTIONS to the next level. I’m ensuring that my actors are polishing up their craft. Also taking the necessary steps to obtain an LLC. Just dotting my i’s and crossing my t’s.
