Daily Inspiration: Meet Michael Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Carter.

Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
What was a hobby quickly turned into a passion for me! I’m naturally a kind of shy person, but when I am behind the camera and capturing images, I can come out of my shell. Photography for me is an outlet for me to express myself in ways I normally struggle to. I usually try to find poses or locations that will reflect how I am feeling in the moment. Sometimes the looks are more angsty and rebellious, other times they are more soft and welcoming. Photography also pushes me to break out of my comfort zone to meet new people and make new connections with all kinds of people.

I love capturing people in their most natural element, and I love the feeling of excitement when they are in love with the results of our shoot. Nowadays, I mostly focus on fashion, wedding, and graduation shoots. From time to time, I am able to break out and do something creative, that’s when I do my best work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been easy, I often struggle with burnout or going through a creative funk. Usually, I find motivation from music and the mood that I get from certain artists. Photography equipment can get really expensive really quick so I have learned to make the best with what I have instead of always getting the latest & greatest gear.

Also early on, I’ve struggled with finding what look or style was unique to me. It is easy for people to get caught up in social media and chasing what will get the most likes or shares online. I try to follow my gut and capture what I like to see, not necessarily what would be most popular at the time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a portrait and wedding photographer in the Towson area. I specialize in capturing all of those “you had to be there” moments. I am most proud of the way that I own my style and look, there are many people out there who have cameras and just download presets online. They kind of have a similar look to every photo, that is fine but it is just would never truly represent the photographer as an artist. I think the thing that sets me apart from others is that bring my authentic self to every shoot, and I tend to capture more realistic images as opposed to the heavily edited images that you may be used to seeing online or in magazines.

How do you think about luck?
I definitely believe luck plays a part in my life & business but at the same time, I’ve noticed that the harder you work the luckier you tend to be. I tend to have good luck when it comes to selecting clients to work with and which ones to avoid. All business is not necessarily good business, and at this point in my career, I am lucky to be able to pick and choose who I can work with.
