Daily Inspiration: Meet Katrina Lee – Parker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Lee – Parker.

Hi Katrina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I stumbled into the field of esthetics. Initially, my interest was make-up artistry; however, in 2008, Maryland no longer required an MUA license, so I enrolled in an Esthetician program. I had no clue what an esthetician was until my admission rep explained, and he sold me by stating that the program featured courses in make-up artistry, so I quickly enrolled! During the program period, the skincare element piqued my interest. I truly fell in love with learning about the skin, the different conditions, and modalities, and my interest in make-up became an afterthought.

Midway through the program, my life took an unexpected nosedive. I discovered that I was pregnant, in an unhealthy relationship, and lost my job, which was extremely stressful and caused me to lose focus on my goals. I took a leave of absence from school to sort things out in my personal life. After my daughter was born, my newfound focus was to provide for her, and I completely dismissed the idea of returning to school. I had a conversation with my sister when she encouraged me to finish what I started. I took her advice, completed the program, and passed my state licensing exam on the first attempt.

I often think of that conversation. If it had never happened, my life would look very different from what it does today, and the foundational path I took to build and develop Beneath the Skin ~ Corrective Skincare Solutions would be non-existent. I am where I am today because of faith, strength, and determination. Make-up artistry was the catalyst, but essentially skincare was my destiny.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After finishing school, I went on to work for several different spas to find my place in the industry. It wasn’t until I began working for a dermatologist that I truly discovered my niche: corrective skincare. I loved watching the transformation and the restoration of confidence from the countless patients that would come in with major skin issues. It was phenomenal, but I saw a hole in their system. The lack was in the customer experience, and it was very sterile, quick, and impersonal. I had a light bulb moment and thought, ‘aha! I am going to create a practice that could be a solution to severe skin issues in a warm atmosphere and give clients an amazing experience! Sounds wonderful, right?! Where in the heck would I find clients?!

I had no formal education in marketing. I had all these great ideas but no one to appeal to. Then there were the overwhelming amount of professional product lines that I had to sift through and find the best fit with proven results on a shoestring budget. Lastly, I thought about where I would see all of my clients anyway, and the buildings were so expensive and intimidating.

Through it all, I learned to push past my fears, calm the negative chatter in my mind, start small, and build and use my resources. I decided to start in a shared space. Shortly after, I took a leap of faith and subleased a room. In one year, my business grew so much that I expanded my practice to a storefront and employed other estheticians. When facing challenges with finding a product line, I reached out to local product reps to send out samples, and I only offered a few services until I was financially able to provide more. Lastly, in the infancy stage of my business, I ran a promotional ad and began to gain regular clients, they started referring others, and the rest is history. This industry is not for the faint at heart. There are challenges and obstacles, but if this is your passion, your will and determination will allow you to push past the barriers and defy all odds.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed Esthetician, Certified Oncology Esthetician, and Acne Specialist. I specialize in Corrective Skincare, specifically acne conditions and hyperpigmentation disorders. I am known for transforming severe skin conditions and restoring my clients’ confidence. Education is the key to maintaining and sustaining healthy skin. I take a unique approach when healing problematic skin, as I go beyond the surface and beneath the skin to give clients a better understanding of the internal and external triggers for their specific conditions. I believe everyone has a unique skin type and condition; therefore, I develop targeted results-driven treatment plans, customized treatments, and home care regimens for each client. I am most proud of following my dream, enduring the difficulties, and embracing my success. If I had given up, I would have missed out on the most rewarding opportunity of helping countless people overcome severe skin, self-esteem, and confidence issues.

How do you define success?
In my opinion, success is not defined by money or prestige. It is characterized by discovering and using your gifts and talents to positively impact and influence other people’s lives, whether physically or mentally, which brings me true peace and a sense of accomplishment.
