Daily Inspiration: Meet Kate Slayton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Slayton.

Hi Kate, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have been crafting and designing. I always knew I needed to be somewhere in the creative world. I have an eye for design and a passion for art, which runs in the family! My mom, Laurie Lester is an incredible artist, she has been painting watercolor and acrylic her whole life. Recently she has retired from her teaching job and can spend more time painting, her side business name is Laurie O Studio and can be found on Facebook.

In 2018, I was married to my best friend and love of my life, Kevin Slayton, at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, a blank canvas yet beautiful scenic venue. Our love for the beach made it so easy to plan and DIY our entire wedding. Let me paint you a little picture of our dream beach wedding with pearl sea shells, pink napkins, lace table runners, sea glass bottles filled with pink flowers, and oyster shell escort cards. During the planning, I realized I knew I needed to be somewhere in the wedding industry, but I didn’t know where until I decided I wanted to do all the signs for our wedding.  I taught myself some basics, attended a few local classes, and then tackled my first project of over 100 oyster shells, which we used as escort cards. After our wedding, I started doing more on the side for family and friends, which lead to eventually starting social media accounts for my new side business, Kate Slayton Lettering.

It wasn’t until 2020 when I lost my job at a local non-profit secondary to the pandemic that my KSL dreams came to fruition. Fast forward to now, and I’ve realized that the pandemic gave me such an opportunity to fulfill my dreams and grow with accomplishments.

Last year, I won Best of Annapolis Wedding Vendor and was featured in several wedding magazines. I bought the cutest market cart Rosie who I’ve spent the last year traveling around to local markets and pop-up events with my home decor + seasonal items.

We live just outside of Annapolis with our Golden doodle, Cali Dune. Our little beach cottage home couldn’t be more perfect for us. When we saw it for the first time, I remember walking into what they called the “in-law suite,” which used to be a garage, saying I will one day have my own business and office in here.  This June, that’s exactly  what we did when we started the makeover for my dream office (known as “The Cottage”)!

I’m so excited to see where my business goes from here, and now with my new space, I am excited to take on more weddings!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I love being my own boss. Running your own business is never a smooth road, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything! Sometimes it can be trial and error to figure out what works for you, and, even then, as your business grows, things can continue to change. One of the things I used to struggle with was getting lost in comparing myself to others; sometimes, I would spend all day scrolling on social media and just comparing myself to others instead of focusing on my work. Once I stopped comparing and focusing on what I could do, I realized that my business started to grow more and become more successful, and I became more confident in myself and my business. My advice for any new business just getting started is to stay true to yourself and know that the vision you have for your business cannot be compared to anyone else’s and that’s how you know you are on the right path.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a hand lettering artist specializing in custom signage for weddings + events, unique place cards such as lemons, and faux sea glass table numbers! My most popular gift is my sonogram keepsake ornaments and plaques. I love finding unique mediums for the letter on. I am not your typical calligraphy artist that does stationary and letters on paper! I’m also known for home decor, seasonal items, and gifts such as custom doormats, pumpkins, and ornaments. I have a variety of rental pieces, including mirrors and card boxes, and have recently added my market cart, Rosie, to my collection. Rosie was purchased a year ago after dreaming of the idea for some time to find a cart to take around to different markets and events. The cart is now the perfect addition to my rentals for bridal and baby showers, birthday parties, and other events, including sign packages to match the occasion.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
