Daily Inspiration: Meet Elijah Hough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Hough.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello. To those who know me best, I am Elijah. Otherwise known as HalfBlackHippy. To tell you my story, would take more than a quick read. It would take more than a listen through my discography. You’d have to take the journey with me. Early on it started as writing amateur raps in journals, mimicking B-Rabbit from 8 Mile, under the moniker HalfBlackHippy.

Those raps turned into my first tracks. Smoking more weed than we should have, me and my friends Zay and Taeo began spending late nights recording over YouTube beats. I knew once we finished our first track that the dedication was there. From that night on, an idea turned into a brand… Several brands in fact. Over the next nearly 4 years we formed our groups 3R [Real Recognize Real] and ANTI NORM. Each is now under our label THEAGEOF2MRW.

My good friend, ZAYOF2MRW, and I put in a lot of commitment to get our music to the point it’s at today. Specifically last year, in 2021, in which we hosted numerous out-of-state shows all over the U.S. Zay, Taeo, myself, and more friends came from playing open mic gigs at spots in Downtown Frederick like Cafe 611. Now we host community fundraising concerts and our annual 2MRWFEST, which has gained much support in the community recently in its short two-year existence.

As I look back at my past as an artist. I realize how long I and my friends have been working, but recognition has only been received recently. We embrace this, thank you all.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I have been blessed to have a very supportive cast of family and friends to help me throughout this stage of my life and career so far. Of course, we all have our issues. But talking with loved ones, and obtaining knowledge of self-love can sift through any bind. Oftentimes, no one teaches us to be self-aware intentionally. You are simply already aware without reaching a higher realm of consciousness.

I realized that on my own, as I did a lot of other aspects of life. I guess I hold some type of blame for not getting the same guidance as other children did. It’s hard to say how long I’ve been like this… A chill guy. But passive? I think not. I feel just how a product of today’s society is supposed to feel. Mindlessly dwelling in a pool of media overload.

I’ve always been a little more desensitized than others. And now I run a tightrope every day because of it. So yeah, weed helps a lot with my problems now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Hippy is a rapper, vocalist, beat producer, audio engineer, concert host, photographer, and personal graphic designer. For years now we have been working on developing a sound that’s unique to our swag. Very simplistic. Very holistic. With a whole new type of groove on it.

A signature of ours that sets me and my friends apart from others, is our ability to naturally blend elements from any genre. I got tracks ranging from lo-fi melodic hip-hop to rapping over rage beats, to rapping over Pharrel’s Frontin’. Some releases I labeled on my SoundCloud with the tag #melancholy, because they truly encapsulate that atmosphere.

Tracks like “Drowning” (feat. ZAYOF2MRW), Dark Space off of my 3D EP, and even newer singles like “I CAN’T KEEP MY GRIP” (feat. BreezyDre) will explain to you exactly what I mean and more. It will reveal to you a piece of who I am

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Consistency is 1,000% the #1 quality that is most important to my success so far. I always wanted to make music professionally since middle school.

I stay consistent in giving much attention to detail to my music and my brand. Every verse, every line, every beat, every cover art, and every promotional video is made with consistent attention to detail. I seek to never deliver a poor product to my viewers and family.

You can’t please everybody, though. I’m just hoping who I am is good enough.
