Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Furlano.
Hi Dylan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Dylan in the Details originally started as travel blog in 2018 because I was constantly getting asked for my destination recommendations and travel tips/tricks. I spent a little less than a year travel blogging before I found myself burnt out and realizing that, while I like to travel, what I really like to do is take photos. Once I pivoted to only doing photography, it was a natural fit for me to work with bloggers and creatives because I was so familiar with their needs and their challenges from my travel blogging days.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think the road is ever smooth for someone who owns their own business! The COVID-19 pandemic has obviously been a challenge for everyone, both personally and professionally. Aside from that, social media is a both a blessing for small business and the easiest way to compare yourself to others. I have access to the most talented and successful folks in my industry with just a few clicks. The challenge to maintain my own style, voice, and confidence in my own work when faced with so many opportunities for comparison has been a struggle that I think many people face across different industries. I have had to get better with boundaries around social media and what I consume. I’ve also had to work on my confidence, mindset and striking the right balance between being inspired to get better while not reducing how far I’ve come.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work with creatives and bloggers to help them plan and photograph their upcoming content so they can focus on other areas of their businesses. I offer an optional pre-planning document so we are organized and both know what our goals for the shoot are. It is structured so we shoot enough content that they are set for about two months. I know how hard it can be to constantly have new content, especially photos, so I’m there to help ease that responsibility.
I’m most proud to create an environment where we have fun together and the photos look like them. I never want someone to look at a photo that I’ve taken and think ‘that’s me?’. I want them to think ‘oh my gosh, that’s me?!?!’. I’m different from other photographers because I’ve been a blogger, so I know how to specifically serve those needs and challenges. Put that knowledge with my endless amounts of bad jokes, puns, and general silliness, and it is the most fun (and efficient) photoshoot you’ll ever have!
