Daily Inspiration: Meet Dorsey Keith III

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorsey Keith III.

Hi Dorsey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a former educator and animal control officer. I combined these two disciplines to create Fangsfrogsandmore living classroom. We use reptiles, and amphibians and invertebrates in an interactive format that allows kids from KGN to high school to touch and interpret what they witness.

I have been involved with animals since very young growing up on family farms. As a 4 yr old, I read encyclopedias cover to cover about animals. As a child, my parents would drop me at the pet shop as they stopped at Mall and I would literally stay all day . So they allowed me animals u could keep in apartments. As a 4 yr, I was training my white mice to live on the 7th floor balcony. As a animal cruelty investigator, I was part of impounded a traveling circus which had an elephant, hyena, tiger, rhino, and parrot. I went full time with the operation to allow time to guide my son who is on the spectrum. I’m also a single dad with 80 animals that my so is a vital part of the upkeep. So currently me and my small team do programs for the Y of Maryland and after-school programs in the city and county and the DMV. With our animals, we can combine science geography and also the discipline of self control and compassion.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well first of we are a family of educators so that part was very organic. One of the challenges is someone who looks like me being a nerdy expert on animals. When I first started out people were Googling everything I said. But it did not offend me at all because I live the life of animals every day with the 80 plus critters I have. Also being in a family like most where the things that interests you are foreign to others makes collaboration hard.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an animal expert and educator that combines humor at times with a way of presenting exotic animals that is as effective in Baltimore city as it would be in Northern Virginia. I’m blessed with the ability to communicate with everyone because I have a universal subject that can never be judge. Nature and the infinite areas that we can cover. And like most teaching, if done right the pupil has no idea they are learning.

Any big plans?
I hope one day to have a team of young science people taking our critters to schools teaching the wonders of nature.
