Daily Inspiration: Meet Bashan McLeod

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bashan McLeod.

Hi Bashan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My company was birthed from doing endless party planning, custom gifts, and decorating for friends and family -just for fun! I’ve always been an organizer and a creator, so I never had a problem helping them out. This, however peaked my intrigue and I wanted to learn more about this industry. It also didn’t hurt that I was told several times that I should go into business for myself – even if it was just starting an Etsy page and selling my custom designs.

I didn’t listen for a while, though, simply because I didn’t want to lose the fun in what I was doing once it was turned into “work”. Once I started though, everything just clicked and I knew that I should’ve been doing this professionally much sooner!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has definitely been harder than I thought it would be. All of my research told me that the event planning industry is one of the easier ones to enter. However, after doing event planning for a while, I found that was not exactly where my passion lied. I wanted to create balloon artistry and do decor, but I quickly realized that would be a bit harder to learn and produce in such a short period of time. I needed inventory and training in order to begin. I did not have any formal training with balloons, completely self-taught, and because I take pride in my work, I had to be sure that my skills were up to par before taking on new clients. This was a short setback for an even bigger comeback.

A few weeks after changing over from event planning to decorating, a friend of mine said that her mother was an event decorator for 13 years and was retiring. She was selling all of the inventory she had gathered over the years to whoever wanted it. My friend had no idea. This was the sign I needed to move forward. Her mother blessed me with an amazing deal – and I was able to start doing decor immediately. I am proud to say that we are now strictly a decorating and balloon creations company. The goal is to continue my training and become a licensed balloon artist, but until then, I am happy with where my company is and where we are going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At EventBay, we specialize in creating beautiful and unique social engagements, parties, and hand-made creations for the different milestones in your life. As a full-service decorating company, we provide a multitude of services ranging from Balloon Decor, Linens Rentals, Pipe & Drape, Centerpiece Rentals, Custom Gifts, Paper Flowers, and everything in between.

What I want readers to know is that my company is different, because I am different. If you talk to anyone that knows me – I am dependable, I never quit, I will get the job done, and I am an intelligent creative person – I like to work smarter not necessarily harder. You need someone like me to handle the ins and outs of your event to be sure that every meticulous detail is covered and handled with care.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My organized creativity is truly my secret weapon. I am very quick on my feet and when problems arise, I can think my way around them. This is due to several reasons. One is that my creativity is a God-given talent that I have had nurtured by my parents since I was young. Both of my parents are creators. My mom introduced me to the world of Cricut and making trinkets by hand. My dad is also an architect who cooks, sews, does hair, and can fix your roof all at the same time. I am also an engineer by trade, so planning and organization is a part of my daily work and professional training.
