Conversations with Simone Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Phillips.

Hi Simone, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I have always loved the food! My family is big on celebrating over a meal, I am always trying “new-to-me” foods so starting a food blog was a natural fit.

I started Charm City Table in May 2017 at a time where I was just beginning to explore Baltimore’s food scene. Over the past few years, I had been trying a different restaurant about every week in Baltimore and always took photos. After a while, I thought to create a platform to share my findings. I decided to focus on Baltimore because I am from here, I am proud to be from Baltimore, and wanted to amplify the restaurant scene here.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a fairly smooth road for me. In my first month, I had over 1,000 organic followers and received an invitation to my first restaurant opening/private tasting! Some of the challenges of growing a platform are consistency (posting regularly) and creating new, exciting content

Consistency is the most challenging piece for me because I struggle with perfectionism and deciding what to post/when can cause me to stall. Charm City Table has helped me overcome that way of thinking at times because it allowed me to “just put the pictures out there” in order to grow instead of obsessing over the details.

With content creation, as a foodie that focuses on a very specific region, it was challenging for me to “find my own voice” especially when we [f00d bloggers] are all invited to the same restaurants and events. I had to be intentional about making my own discoveries in the area and making space for that on my platform.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do? What are you most proud of?
I am a food blogger, social media consultant, and content creator. At this point in my journey, I am most proud of my reach and engagement. I have the ability to change the narrative of what Baltimore has to offer through sharing photos and reviews of the food here. My content has gone viral on several occasions and engaged folks nationally and internationally in conversations about the food scene in Baltimore, MD. Words cannot describe how rewarding that is for me!

What’s next?
I plan to host some in-person events in the future! These events would be for people living in Baltimore or visiting the area. Event curating and hosting is brand new territory for me but I am excited to connect with fellow food lovers in person!
