Conversations with Sharon “PINKEE” Pinkerton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon “PINKEE” Pinkerton.

Hi Sharon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Picture it, 2016 Baltimore, a friend/co-worker of mine named, Kelly taught a basic cake decorating class at the cake and wedding cottage. She had been trying to get me to take one of her classes for a few years.

We received a nice profit-sharing check at our job, so I went ahead and signed up. In one of our classes, we learned to do an image transfer. I chose my Orioles and before I finished decorating my cake one of my classmates wanted to buy my cake for her brother. That was it I was hooked.

Someone actually wanted to pay for my artwork. I have been decorating cakes and cupcakes out of my kitchen since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not always. I started in a very small house in Armistead Gardens which meant a very small kitchen to work in. My Honeybear, boyfriend Rick, built shelves and a pull-down table for me so I would have a workspace. I had my 3rd son, Colin, 2 months into caking. Those were some challenging things in the beginning.

I had done a 1st birthday cake for a customer’s twins birthday. It was 1/2 Mickey and 1/2 Minnie, two different fondant colors on each side. I had never done fondant-covered cakes before. When the customer got to the venue the cake had collapsed! This was the first time I was close to quitting cakes. I had ruined the party. Thankfully she was very very understanding.

Oh, there was that time in 2020 I forgot someone’s cake because I was preoccupied with my son Tyler’s High school graduation. The customer messaged me about a pickup time. Oh my gosh, my heart fell into my stomach! I never worked so fast in my life! I told her what happened and could she give me until the evening and I threw that cake together in a jiffy. Surprised me.

Not being able to find ingredients to trying to schedule cakes and life.

I’m sure there are more but these stand out the most.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a mom who works a full-time job during the day Monday through Friday and I make cakes in the evenings and the weekends. I specialize in Custom buttercream cakes, and some fondant covered. I am known for how moist my cakes and cupcake are as well as the look of my cakes.

I’m most proud of how far I have come since I started caking 5 1/2 years ago and only doing this part-time. My decorating work, the taste of my cake, and my customer service.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
I believe we should take risks sometimes. If we don’t we will always wonder what would be. For me, I ask God what I should do. I know when he gives me peace then it’s a risk worth taking even when it’s scary.

She went from dressing business windows with Oriole and Ravens artworks.
She’s a “never give up person” and I’m proud of what she has accomplished.
