Conversations with Matthew FitzMaurice and Jennifer Moutenot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew FitzMaurice and Jennifer Moutenot.

Hi Matthew and Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We founded Fall Forward Fitness to fill the gap that exists between mental and physical health. We are building a community of people who can uplift each other to overcome the pains life inevitably throws our way.

Physical health has always come naturally to us. Growing up, we trained to compete at the Division I level and we were able to make that dream come true. Being fit and active was our favorite escape that helped us process other challenges in our life.

For Matthew, the first two years of college brought struggles that he couldn’t imagine. His anxiety took over and wasn’t able to manage it. From nearly failing his first semester, to the injuries, the old struggles resurfacing, the broken relationships, the insecurities, and the fear of what was next to come – he had to make a change. The perspective shift that he began to work on has taken years to get him to where he is today.

Fall Forward Fitness embodies the things that we wish we would have heard during those most challenging moments. The idea that you are alone in the way you feel or think is crushing, but couldn’t be further from the truth. This brand is going to offer the tools for you to take a step in the right direction, gaining new perspectives on how to best manage your mental and physical health.

We launched Fall Forward Fitness in May 2021 and are rapidly growing our community and the resources to improve our community’s mental and physical health.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When we launched Fall Forward Fitness in the summer 0f 2021, like every other business, we struggled. The “new norm” of living in a virtual world where people are not physically together, face to face, made our message harder to spread. We needed to find the right approaches on social media to reach audiences that expand further than just our own social and family circles.

At the same time, we think one of the biggest struggles is sharing the idea that mental health does matter, and that you should act on it. Despite the fact that it is 2021, and our society is evolving, the stigma around mental health still exists. Being recent college athletes, we can attest to the fact that the stigma is still very real and more importantly, EVERYONE has to manage their mental health – just as they do physical health. Although you may not be injured or sick, physical health requires constant effort. Mental health requires the same amount of care and effort, and we believe the goal should be to make the tandem a priority every day. Sharing an idea that everyone may not agree with or think is important has shown to be difficult, but hearing the impact Fall Forward Fitness has made on our community makes it all the worthwhile.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Being athletes all our life, we understand the pressure and reluctancy to fail. From our experiences, we are able to take what we have learned to create our dream of Fall Forward Fitness. Day-to-day, we give mental health an image or a face by establishing our social media presence online. We share Instagram stories, posts, Community Spotlights, and let others in our community share their tips and stories. Our content is uplifting, but also authentic and honest. We want our audience to know that do not have to struggle alone.

We created clothing pieces with the intention to keep the conversation going and to feel a part of the community. We are trying to create a brand where the logo is more than just a piece of clothing. When you see someone wearing the Fall Forward Fitness logo, you will immediately feel that sense of community and know that there is someone who is on your side, mentally and physically.

We also offer speaker events to a variety of audiences that range from high school to college athlete clubs and sports teams. Our speeches provide the listeners with several tools to highlight what it takes to build a relationship with yourself and will give everyone the ability to reduce their anxieties and build a reliable community around them. This emotional and energizing message is exactly what we wish we had heard during the peaks of our anxiety.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
We define success through our community. Providing the ideas, places, people, and resources for you to achieve your mental and physicals goals is what we do – however, we wouldn’t be successful in doing that if the message stopped there. We truly believe that by pushing yourself to do what you love and to be the healthiest version of you, you will be an asset to those around you. If we are able to initiate a spark in you to follow your passion, you will naturally give that spark to another person who will then pass it on to another, and so on – that is our epitome of success. Fall Forward Fitness can mean something different to every person who interacts with us, and that’s ok! If our community is growing, striving to reach their health goals, and helping others to find their true sense of happiness, then we have done what we set out to do.
