Conversations with Latetia Smoot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latetia Smoot.

Hi Latetia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have genuinely enjoyed baking for family and friends over the last 20 years. In 2018, I was asked to provide baked goods to support a charitable organization and decided to prepare something a little different, Cake Pops. The cake pops were a huge success. They sold out quickly and had tremendous reviews. After a few weeks, I made them for a friend’s anniversary and was given great feedback. That sparked the idea to try other flavors, designs, and packaging for beta testing. I continued to provide samples for a few months, and then Kake Ballis-Stick was born. In June of 2018, I sold my first dozen of Cake Pops. One year later, I was asked to make a small wedding cake. Again, the feedback from the wedding cake was positive and inspiring. So, I decided to work on creating cake recipes for what is now my classic and custom cakes. Over the last four years, my bakery business has allowed me to enjoy and rekindle my love for baking and my passion for creative designs.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
The entrepreneurship road as a baker has not been all smooth. The journey has had some bumps along the way that became learning opportunities. Some of my struggles have been creating solid recipes that my customers would enjoy and love. Also, understanding that not everyone is an ideal customer for my business, finding my desired customer base, and balancing a full-time job as a nurse has been some of my challenges.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a self-taught baker and cake artist specializing in custom cake designs. I am most known for my vanilla cake which is Kake Ballis-Stick’s most requested flavor and the foundation for most of my custom cake designs. Baking brings me so much joy, so I am most proud of my ability to share that joy with my customers through my gift and love for dessert. I am elated when I can help my customers create memorable events by bringing their cake visions to life. Kake Ballis-Stick was born through my desire to help a needed cause. Many years prior, I spent lots of time baking with my grandmother and auntie as a little girl. Then, as a young adult, I could share my cakes during gatherings with family and friends. I want each cake to help my customers create unforgettable memories and smiles with their family and friends. I believe that is what sets Kake Ballis-Stick apart from others.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One lesson I have learned along my journey is that it is essential to create an experience, not just a cake, when serving others. Second, when you make something special with your heart and soul, others can truly feel the love it was made with and appreciate it. Finally, continue to allow God to use my gift to make others happy.
