Conversations with Krystal Bailey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Bailey.

Hi Krystal, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Last summer, my friends gathered in my backyard to hang out and sip wine after having lifted some of the Covid restrictions. As the “crafty one” of the group, I just happened to have paint supplies and canvases in stock when someone suggested we do a sip & paint. However, none of my friends had enough confidence in their artistic abilities to start with a blank canvas. “What if they each had a pre-printed canvas?” I thought. Then I thought about all their different personalities and interests and how great it would be to customize each canvas. And the idea for Custom Paint Kits by Creative Chaos Studio was born. I worked as an Administrative Assistant for 11 years at Towson, but I was burning to branch out into a more creative field. I researched, designed, saved, and planned for ten long months before I submitted my resignation letter in the form of paint kits personalized for each of my 6 managers. Although they were sad to see me go (there were tears), they loved their kits and supported my dream 100%.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my biggest hurdles has been increasing my reach. Wearing all hats (Accountant, Social Media Manager, Production Manager, Graphic Designer, etc.) is difficult. Still, when it comes to finding leads for potential clients and following up, that is where I fall short. Building a social media following is harder than you’d think. Creating, editing, and posting content consistently, plus interacting with posts, takes a lot of time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Each of my paint kits comes individually packaged and includes all paint supplies (paint, mixing pallet, 3 paint brushes, & disposable apron) inside of an 8×10 or 11×14 canvas. What sets me apart from others is that each canvas is designed specifically for the recipient. I have plenty of images to choose from that can be customized, but I can also design whatever the customer wants. It can be customized to include names and dates or even have a photo turned into a canvas! That is something that I have never seen before and am most proud of. I also have a Mini Kit available. It is 4×6 and comes with 1 paint brush, a mixing pallet, & 5 paint colors. The most popular design is the Cassette Tape with a Spotify code that plays a song when scanned with the app. Customers can choose to add any song to a canvas.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Sip & paint parties are really popular right now. They have grown in popularity over the last 8 years or so. My ultimate goal is to have an actual studio space where customers can order their kits in person and have them ready within an hour and provide an event /artist space available to rent. Paint parties may phase out, but the artist will live on forever.
