Conversations with Kristin Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Baker.

Hi Kristin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I worked in the events & hospitality industry–waitressing and bartending at weddings, banquets, restaurants & clubs for over 9 years in my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana.

So I’ve seen a lot, learned a lot, and been able to experience and work with some great individuals. From a very young age, I’ve had a natural eye for creativity and a passion for helping others achieve their highest potential.

Once I relocated to D.C in 2018, I landed a part-time event assistant role with a local event planning firm. Did that for about 2 years and finally realized… that my ideas were something I wanted to share with the world.

That’s when MHD was launched, with the intention of crafting meaningful, soulful events. Meridian Haus x Design specializes in transforming spaces; from corporate events to commercial interior design.

Being the mastermind behind it all, I’m in my element. You have an idea-now it’s my job to bring that dream to life through design. That’s what sets me apart. Pushing you to think outside the box, through an elaborated, layered approach. Turning spaces into experiences.

It’s the energy I want you to feel when you walk into an MHD production. Being on the east coast with an immense amount of culture and history leaves me inspired every day.

It gives me an extra boost, extra inspiration to begin my own journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting at the bottom is never fun. Who wants to wait, right? Everything is painted to be so instantaneous. Starting anything new takes maturity, the right support, and diligence. I’ve come to a point now where I’m okay if it doesn’t go how I pictured.

That doesn’t mean giving up, it just means I redirect my energy to what’s in front of me and not worry so much about others and what they say or think, and keep trying until it happens. I will keep knocking on doors, stepping outside of my comfort zone, and breaking barriers. I always try to control situations but I’m learning to take my hands off. It’s much less stressful to let something play out.

There’s a lesson in everything, realizing what you need to get out of the lesson… that’s the challenge. That doesn’t mean stop. We’re all here for a reason but if you don’t try or you never fail, you’ll never find out what that reason is. Many sleepless nights of wondering what if… what if no one ever reaches out or books me? or what if they don’t get what I’m trying to create?

Really honing in on my values, my mission, and what I want to leave behind is what keeps me grounded. I do think it becomes even more of a struggle when you know your purpose and are on a path to break generational trauma or curses because you know how great it will be, you’re just bursting! so the wait is hard.

Being conscious of the realness of entrepreneurship and how that’s shaped me to be a strong mother, wife, friend, and business owner.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

The first thing I think about is how I can elevate your idea. How can we take it to the next level? How can we make it luxe? I want to do more than just put a logo up on a wall or order another couch. I want to design something that makes an impact, something that has a message, if you don’t have a message we can create one. There has to be a connection.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Growing in my faith and having a strong relationship with God is what helps me be my best self. Building a network and having people around me that want to see me win and want to and will speak positively of me when I’m not in a room helps as well.

I’m a member of the New Life Worship Center in Indianapolis so I watch Pastor Ramsey on Sundays. When I need a midweek pick-me-up, I listen to One Podcast with Toure Roberts and Sarah Jakes Roberts. I’ve been getting better at reading since the COVID era struck–self-help books, anything about Black history or poetry is my thing.

Right now, I’m reading Shifting by Charisse Jones and Kumea Shorter- Gooden and at work, I am reading Coaching for Performance by Sir John Whitmore. With the ups and downs of life, I have to keep my spirit fed with knowledge.

It’s a must.

It’s a must.
