Conversations with Kelly Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Moore.

Hi Kelly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have a dear friend who travels to Africa every year for her business. In 2018, she brought back literally, thousands of glass beads from Ghana! The beads are created by artisans in the Krobo region of Ghana from recycled glass, and they’re gorgeous!! My friend needed help making bracelets, using the Krobo beads for a festival, and there is where my journey into jewelry making began.

I opened an Etsy shop and got to work. I’m pretty much self-taught, through trial and error, YouTube videos, and a tribe of creative girlfriends I’ve met online, who without, I would not be where I am today!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’d say it’s been a steady road. 2020 kind of put a dent in everyone’s business. But, this year has been my best one yet! Instagram has been a great platform to grow my business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve never considered myself to be a creative type. My career journey has spanned from Social Worker to Insurance Rep, to Teacher and private tutor. I love color! I love unique designs and textures. I love finding unique gemstones, pearls, shells and glass beads. I use Sterling Silver, Brass, Bronze and Gold Filled in my designs. I refer to my jewelry as ‘Boho Fresh.’ I’m still pretty new at this, and have a lot left to learn, but, I’m truly happy to just sit in my studio and create and shop for beads!!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I was born in Baltimore, and my whole family is from here. It’s a beautiful, vibrant and eclectic place to live and visit! Baltimore is filled with creative, interesting and hard-working people! I lived near the Inner Harbor after I got married, and some of my favorite memories are walking, my then young son, to the Aquarium, Science Center, and Cross St. Market.
