Conversations with JoJo Hall

Today we’d like to introduce you to JoJo Hall.

Hi JoJo, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
When I was younger, I always had a passion for writing and a love for travel. I remember writing short stories at the age of 8 and traveling for the first time at the age of 6. Growing up, my family loved to travel but our financial situation prevented us from doing bigger, more extended types of travel. There were times when we didn’t travel at all because we didn’t have the money. Especially when I got into college, money was tight and travel wasn’t a priority for me. However, I never lost my desire to travel and write. I had goals and dreams of traveling and writing about them to preserve my memories. One travel goal I’ve had for MANY years was to visit London. I’ve always had a fascination with London, its bustling scenery, cultural diversity, and history. Unfortunately, my family wanted me to go but couldn’t afford to do so. Even as a young adult in college, with two jobs, I still couldn’t afford to visit London.

Then, something amazing happened while I was in college! In the fall semester of my senior year as an undergrad, I studied abroad in London. It was in the works for most of my college days, because I knew that I wanted to visit London, and a study abroad program was my best chance of achieving my travel goal. It was such an amazing experience! I met some wonderful people, visited multiple countries, attend a lot of events, and participated in numerous activities. I loved every minute of it and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Finally, I had achieved my number one travel goal and it felt amazing!

My personal struggles with trying to achieve my travel goals, and finally achieving them after many years, truly inspired me to help others in this regard. My experience inspired me to create a collection of written pieces, detailing my personal struggles, travel experiences, and the things I did along the way to help me achieve my travel goal! It started out as posts on Tumblr many years ago but it didn’t gain too much traction. It didn’t create the audience or community I was looking for. Though I did gain some followers and likes, I felt like I wasn’t connecting with anyone and inspiring, or helping, them to travel.

It wasn’t until April 2022, when the COVID pandemic was still new and apparent in the world, that I decided to combine my two passions into one. I decided to create a blog, YouTube channel, and other social media accounts to share my travel tips, tricks, and shared experience! I ditched Tumblr and created a whole website with my blog, JoJo’s Cup of Mocha. Months later, my YouTube channel came about. It was very slow in the beginning but slow and steady wins the race!

Fast forward to 2022, I can honestly say that my intentions and goals have come to fruition, and continue to do so every day. The comments, feedback, and stories I receive from my followers and travel community, inspiring them to travel or learn about tips/tricks, are like nothing else. It’s truly rewarding, humbling, and overall amazing that I’ve been able to inspire and help others no matter how big or small that help may be. At the end of the day, I wanted others to know that it’s possible to achieve your travel goals, no matter what they look like. It may take some time, patience, and hard work to make it happen, but I want my audience to know that you can do it! With the right tips, resources, information, and determination, any travel goal can become a reality.

Currently, I’m still working on creating content for my blog, YouTube channel, and social media accounts to share my travel experiences, insights, tips, and resources I’ve used to travel. It’s a never-ending project because there are always new resources, tips, information, and apps being released every day to help with travel. So, you’re always learning new things, using trial and error, and reporting back to help or inspire others based on your own experiences. I’m very excited about my future content and cannot wait to share it with others!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road I’ve taken to get to where I am today has not been smooth or easy in the slightest sense. Although I’ve always loved writing and traveling, combing the two into a blog format, and even a YouTube channel, was something very new to me. My education, experience, and degrees are in very clinical, analytical, and behavioral fields. The whole idea and process of being creative, sharing personal experiences, and getting outside my comfort zone was a challenge in and of itself. Not to mention the technical aspects of operating a website, themes, editing videos, creating thumbnails, and other elements that come with the territory. I’ve never had to do anything like that before, so there was (and still is) a big learning curve.

Especially when I started my blog and YouTube channel, it was hard because I was also doing my master’s program at the same time as working a full-time job. It’s been, and continues to be, a struggle with time management between everything. Although I’ve been done with my master’s program since December 2020, I still have a full-time job and struggle with finding the time and energy to put content up for a blog, YouTube channel, and social media accounts.

It’s all a learning process and I’m constantly learning and tweaking things as I go along. However, the bumps in the road, trials, and errors I’ve had to go through have contributed to where I am today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a travel blogger and vlogger in the travel community. I create, edit, and produce content aimed at sharing my travel tips, tricks, experience, and more! This means, I create blog posts, edit pictures, edit vlogs, create reels, TikToks, and other social media posts on my travel content.

The content I produce can be used by any traveler, whether they’re a newbie, highly experienced, a digital nomad, a full-time traveler, or have a 9-5 job. Even though I have a full-time job and travel when I can, I try to share things that are applicable to almost everyone in most situations.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising that most people may not know about me is that I’m a full-time social worker with a master’s degree. Depending on the situation, I just mention that I have a full-time job and I do my blog and YouTube channel part-time, but I usually don’t go into any specifics unless I’m asked or the situation calls for it.

If I’m just engaging with someone for the first time, or we’ve had more conversations about other things, no one would know that I don’t travel full-time. When I’m posting about my travels, talking about it, and uploading vlogs, people assume I do this full-time when I don’t. Though, I’d like to change that someday!
