Conversations with Joey Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Powell.

Hi Joey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After graduating from Edgewood High School in 2015, I went on to study exercise sports science and play football at Frostburg State University (2015-20). Shortly before my senior year was cut short by COVID 19, I interned under the FSU strength and conditioning staff. My original plan following graduation was to find a graduate assistantship to coach college football and obtain a masters degree. Due to most division II and III schools canceling their seasons, I was unable to find a job coaching. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise when later that summer I was offered a free training session at a local Harford County gym called Spartan Sports and Wellness. After my trial workout, I was confronted with an opportunity to intern as a personal trainer and athletic development coach. Fast forward almost two years later, I am a full time certified personal trainer and athletic development coach for F1 Performance LLC. I was also a 2022 nominee in the spring edition of Best of Harford magazine.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road to now was not always easy, but I’m sure no one’s ever is. A notable bump in my journey thus far was the transition from my original hiring company (Spartan Sports and Wellness) to my current company, F1 Performance LLC. Without getting into details, I am much happier with the organization, schedule, training format etc.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a full time personal trainer and athletic development coach. I use strength and conditioning practices and full body workouts to develop well rounded and functionally fit athletes and clients. I am most known for my success in helping clients achieve their fat loss goals (athletes and adults) in a safe and timely manner. I pride myself on my ability to help clients achieve their physique or athletic goals no matter their athletic, genetic, or personal limitations. Being a trainer takes patience and perseverance. No one has more of those two qualities than me.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
How people feel about themselves and the work they put in after a session is what means the most to me. Growing up, I struggled to see the best in myself and what I had to offer. I love having the opportunity everyday to positively impact peoples lives and the way they feel about themselves.
